How Should a Bomber Jacket Fit? Shoulders, Length and Sleeves

How Should a Bomber Jacket Fit? Shoulders, Length and Sleeves

Men's and women's black leather bomber jackets on a soft neutral background

A leather bomber is a short jacket that sits close to the body, so small fit differences show more than they would on a longer coat. Good bomber jacket fit comes down to a handful of points: the shoulder seam, the chest, the rib-knit waistband, the sleeves and a little intended fullness above the hem. Here is what each one should look like for men and women, with quick tests you can do in front of a mirror.

Quick answer: A good bomber jacket fit puts the shoulder seam at the edge of your shoulder, leaves room in the chest for a light sweater and lets the rib-knit waistband sit at or just below your belt line without riding up. Sleeves should reach your wrist bone, with the knit cuffs holding them in place.

Bomber jacket fit checklist: what to look for

Use this table as a quick reference when you try a bomber on. Wear the kind of top you plan to wear under it most often.

Fit point What you want Sign it is wrong
Shoulders Seam at the edge of the shoulder, or slightly dropped on relaxed styles Seam creeps toward the neck, or droops well down the arm on a fitted cut
Chest Zips easily over a tee or thin knit, with a flat hand's room inside Pulling lines around the zip, or it will not close over a sweater
Waistband Sits at or just below the belt and hugs without pinching Rides above the belt when standing, or hangs loose at the hips
Blousing A little soft fullness above the band A balloon of spare leather, or none because the body is pulled tight
Sleeves Cuffs reach the wrist bone with arms at your sides Cuffs jump to mid-forearm when you reach, or bunch over your hand
Back Smooth across the shoulder blades Tight pull across the back when you reach forward

Where should the shoulder seam sit on a bomber?

On a classic bomber the shoulder seam should land right at the edge of your shoulder bone, where the top of the arm begins. Relaxed and oversized bombers drop that seam a little down the arm by design, which is fine as long as the rest of the jacket is in proportion.

Shoulders are the one point you should never compromise on. They are the hardest part of a leather jacket to alter, so if the shoulders fit and everything else is close, you are in good shape. If the seam pulls up toward your neck, go up a size.

How much room should the chest and body have?

A bomber should feel close but not tight. You want enough room to zip it over a T-shirt or a light sweater without the front pulling. Two tests help:

  • The zipped-up test. Zip the jacket fully and stand naturally. The front should lie flat with no tension lines fanning out from the zip, and the collar should close without pressing into your neck.
  • The hug test. Cross your arms in front of you. You should feel the back of the jacket, but it should not dig into your armpits or pull hard across the shoulder blades.

Where should the waistband of a bomber jacket sit?

The rib-knit waistband is what gives a bomber its shape. It should sit at or just below your belt line, roughly at the top of the hip, and hug the body enough to hold the jacket in place without squeezing.

A little blousing above the band is part of the design. The leather should puff out slightly over the knit, especially at the back and sides. That softness is not a sign the jacket is too big. It only becomes a problem when there is a balloon of spare leather that you can pinch in large folds.

If the band rides up above your belt when you are standing still, the jacket is too short or too small for you. Some rise when you sit or reach is normal.

How long should bomber jacket sleeves be?

With your arms relaxed at your sides, the knit cuffs should reach your wrist bone. Because the cuffs grip the wrist, a touch of extra sleeve length simply bunches slightly above them, which looks natural on a bomber.

Now try the arms-raised test. Reach forward as if holding a steering wheel, then lift both arms overhead. The cuffs may slide back a little, but they should not end up halfway along your forearm, and the waistband should not jump far above your belt.

The bombers below show the classic shape in genuine leather. Each is handmade in our workshop in standard sizes or made to measure, so you can check these fit points against the real thing.

How does layering change the fit?

Decide what you will wear underneath most often before choosing a size. Over a tee in mild weather, a closer fit looks sharp. If you plan to wear knitwear through colder months, try the jacket on with a sweater of similar thickness, because a bomber that is perfect over a T-shirt can feel tight over a chunky knit.

A bomber is not meant to be a heavy winter coat, so you do not need to size up for several thick layers. One sweater or a thin hoodie underneath is a sensible upper limit.

Will a leather bomber stretch over time?

A little, and mostly in feel rather than size. Leather softens and molds to your body at the elbows, shoulders and back, so a jacket that feels snug at first often feels comfortable after a few weeks of wear. It does not gain meaningful length, though, and the knit band and cuffs stay where they are. Our guide on whether leather jackets stretch explains what to expect.

How should a women's leather bomber fit?

The same shoulder and sleeve rules apply, with two extra points.

  • Length. Cropped bombers end at or just above the natural waist and pair well with high-rise jeans, skirts and wide-leg trousers. Hip-length bombers place the band at the top of the hip and work well with leggings and straight jeans.
  • Bust and waist. When zipped, the jacket should not pull across the bust or gape between the zip and the body. Many women's bombers are shaped through the waist, so check that the band hugs rather than flares.

What if you are between sizes?

Choose the size that fits your shoulders and chest. You cannot add room there later, but a slightly long sleeve tucks into the cuff without trouble. If you are broad through the shoulders or plan to layer knitwear, go up; if you wear thin layers and like a trim look, the smaller size may suit. Our guide to choosing a leather jacket between sizes covers more scenarios.

Before ordering, follow our steps on how to measure for a leather jacket and compare the numbers with our size guide. If you still fall between sizes, made-to-measure sizing is the simplest fix: choose "Customise Size (made to measure)" on the product page, then email info@whiteburaq.com with your order number and measurements. Made-to-measure pieces take about 2 weeks. Standard sizes can be returned within 30 days of delivery, unworn with tags attached, while made-to-measure sizes are final sale.

FAQ

Should a bomber jacket be tight or loose?

Neither. It should be close to the body with room for a light layer, a hugging waistband and a little blousing above it. Tight pulling at the zip or a jacket that balloons are both signs of the wrong size.

Is it normal for the waistband to ride up when I sit?

Yes, a little. Any short jacket lifts when you sit or reach. It should settle back to your belt line when you stand, and it should not sit above the belt while you are standing still.

Can a tailor shorten bomber sleeves?

Often, yes, but it means removing and reattaching the knit cuffs, so it needs a tailor experienced with leather. It is usually simpler to get the length right when you order.

Get the shoulders, chest, waistband and sleeves right and the rest of a good bomber jacket fit takes care of itself. Browse our men's leather bomber jackets and women's leather bomber jackets.
