How Should a Leather Vest Fit? Chest, Length and Layering Room

How Should a Leather Vest Fit? Chest, Length and Layering Room

Men's black leather biker vest and women's red lambskin leather vest for a vest fit guide

A leather vest has no sleeves to hide behind, which means fit shows more than it does on a jacket. So, how should a leather vest fit? Close to the body, closed without strain over whatever you wear underneath and long enough to cover your belt line, with a few small differences between biker vests, waistcoats and women's styles.

Quick answer: A leather vest should close easily over the layer you plan to wear under it, with no pulling across the chest and no gaping at the front. The armholes should sit close without cutting in, the shoulders should lie flat, and the hem should cover your belt line, or the trouser waistband for a waistcoat.

How should a leather vest fit across the chest?

The chest is the first thing to check. Close the vest fully, then look in a mirror from the front and the side. The front edges should meet cleanly, with no tight lines pulling outward from the zip, snaps or buttons, and no gap opening between them.

Next, cross your arms and reach forward as if you were holding handlebars or a steering wheel. A little tension across the back is normal; seams straining or snaps popping open is not. On the other hand, if you can pinch a generous handful of spare leather at each side, the vest is probably too big and will look boxy.

Genuine leather softens and relaxes slightly with wear, lambskin more than heavier hides, but it won't gain a full size. Our guide on whether leather jackets stretch explains how much give to expect.

Armholes and shoulders: the details most people miss

Armholes should follow the body. If they sit too low or too wide, the sides gape when you move and your shirt shows through the opening. If they are too tight, they rub under the arm and push the whole vest upward when you lift your arms.

The shoulder section should lie flat on top of your shoulder without sliding toward your neck or slipping off the edge. A vest meant to go over a jacket or hoodie needs noticeably roomier armholes, because the sleeves underneath take up space.

How long should a leather vest be?

The right length depends on the style:

  • Biker vests: the front hem should reach your belt line or slightly below it when you stand. Some riding vests are cut a little longer at the back so the lower back stays covered when you lean forward. If the vest rides up and shows your shirt when you sit, it is too short.
  • Waistcoats: the hem should fully cover the trouser waistband, with no shirt showing between the two. On a traditional buttoned waistcoat, the bottom button is commonly left undone, which gives the hips room when you sit.
  • Women's vests: fashion vests vary more. A cropped vest may end at the natural waist by design, while a longer cut can reach the high hip. What matters is that the length looks intentional with the pants, jeans or skirt you pair it with.

Sizing a vest for what you wear underneath

Decide on your usual under-layer before you pick a size. That one choice changes the right size more than anything else.

  • Over a t-shirt: measure your chest over a tee and choose a close fit. This is how most vests look their sharpest.
  • Over a shirt and sweater: measure over that combination and allow a little more ease through the chest and waist.
  • Over a hoodie or jacket: you will usually need to size up, sometimes by more than one size, and the vest will look loose if you later wear it over a tee alone.

If you want one vest for both, size it for the layer you wear most often. A vest sized to go over a jacket rarely looks right over a single tee, and one sized for a tee usually won't close over a jacket.

Here are three vests from our collection to compare cuts and finishes:

The sitting and standing test

Always try a vest in the positions you will actually spend time in.

  1. Stand relaxed. The front should close flat and the hem should cover your belt.
  2. Sit in a chair. The vest shouldn't bunch hard at your stomach or ride up past your belt at the back.
  3. Lean forward with your arms out, as if riding or driving. Check that your back stays covered and the armholes don't dig in.
  4. Raise both arms overhead. Some lift is normal, but the whole vest shouldn't climb toward your chest.

What about side laces and adjusters?

Some leather vests have side laces, buckles or a back adjuster to fine-tune the waist. If a vest you are considering has them, set them in the middle of their range when you try it on, so you can tighten or loosen later. Loosened laces can make room for a slightly thicker layer, but they are a fine adjustment, not a replacement for the right size. Without adjusters, the waist needs to fit well from the start.

How should a women's leather vest fit?

Women's vests are often shaped with seams or darts through the bust and waist. Check that the shaping lines up with the fullest part of the bust rather than sitting above or below it, and that the front closes without pulling across the chest. A tailored, buttoned style should skim the waist. A vest designed to be worn open can be a touch roomier, so judge it mainly on how the shoulders and armholes sit.

How to measure for a leather vest

Measure over the layer you plan to wear underneath, with a soft tape held level and snug but not tight. You need three numbers:

  • Chest: around the fullest part, under the arms and across the shoulder blades.
  • Waist or stomach: around the widest point of your midsection, wherever it falls.
  • Length: from the top of the shoulder beside the neck, straight down the front to where you want the hem to sit.

Compare your numbers with our size guide. Our step-by-step guide to measuring for a leather jacket uses the same chest and waist technique, so it works for vests too.

When should you choose made to measure?

Made to measure makes sense if your chest and waist fall into different sizes, if you are long or short in the torso, or if you want a vest to fit precisely over one specific layer. To order, choose "Customise Size (made to measure)" on the product page, then email info@whiteburaq.com with your order number and measurements. Made-to-measure pieces take about 2 weeks.

Keep in mind that made-to-measure sizes are final sale and can't be returned. Standard sizes can be returned within 30 days of delivery if they are unworn and unused with all tags attached. Read more on our made to measure page, or see our guide to a fully custom leather vest.

FAQ

Should a leather vest be tight or loose?

Close, but not tight. It should close without pulling over your usual layer and let you reach forward comfortably. A loose vest looks boxy and gapes at the armholes.

Should I size up in a leather vest?

Only if you plan to wear it over thicker layers such as a hoodie or jacket. For wear over a tee or shirt, choose the size that matches your chest measurement taken over that layer.

Can I wear a leather vest over a leather jacket?

Yes, if you size the vest for it. Measure over the jacket and expect to go up in size, knowing the vest will then fit loosely over a tee alone.

Should I leave the bottom button of a leather waistcoat undone?

On a traditional buttoned waistcoat, many people do, following tailoring custom, because it adds room at the hips. On a vest with a zip or snap front, close it fully.

So, how should a leather vest fit? Close and flat through the chest, neat at the armholes and long enough to cover the belt, over the layer you actually wear. Find your style in our leather vests collection.
