A-2 vs G-1 Flight Jacket: Differences, Fit and Which to Buy

A-2 vs G-1 Flight Jacket: Differences, Fit and Which to Buy

Men's distressed brown lightweight cowhide A-2 flight jacket with shirt collar, snap-flap pockets and knit cuffs

The A-2 and the G-1 look alike from across a room: both are waist-length leather flight jackets with a zip front, two front pockets, and knit cuffs and waistband. The differences that matter are the collar, the back and how much the jacket lets you move. The A-2 is the Army flight jacket with a flat leather shirt collar; the G-1 is the Navy jacket with a sheepskin collar and, on the military pattern, a pleated back cut for reaching.

Quick answer: Choose the A-2 if you want a clean, flat leather collar that dresses up easily and works across three seasons. Choose the G-1 if you want a warmer sheepskin collar and a more rugged look. Fit both the same way: waistband at your belt line, shoulder seams on the bone, and enough reach to drive comfortably.

Where Each Jacket Comes From

The A-2 was adopted by the US Army Air Corps in 1931. Its pattern is what most people picture as a flight jacket: a shirt-style leather collar with hidden snaps at the points and a hook-and-eye at the throat, a zip front, two patch pockets with snap flaps, stitched-down shoulder straps, and knit cuffs and waistband.

The G-1 is the Navy's counterpart. Its line goes back to the M-422 specification of 1940, and the history of the G-1 military flight jacket shows how that specification evolved over the following decades. The signature details are a sheepskin collar, a bi-swing back with underarm gussets, knit cuffs and waistband, two front flap pockets and an inside pocket. For the full history, see our A-2 flight jacket guide and G-1 flight jacket guide.

The Collar: The Difference You Notice Every Day

The A-2 collar is a shirt collar made in leather. In our workshop it is built from a top collar and an under collar sewn together and turned, so it holds its roll instead of flopping open. We cut it from the same hide as the fronts wherever the hide allows, so the collar and the body match in grain and tone. Hidden snaps keep the points down. Because it lies flat, it sits neatly under a scarf.

The G-1 collar is sheepskin with the wool side showing. It stands up when you flip it, frames the face and blocks wind at the back of the neck, the spot a flat collar leaves open. The trade-off is bulk and weight around the neck and shoulders. It also picks up skin oils and hair product, so it needs its own care; our guide to cleaning a sheepskin collar walks through it. On our two G-1 jackets with sheepskin collars, the collar is detachable, so you can leave it off on milder days.

The Back: Bi-Swing Pleats and Underarm Gussets

A bi-swing back is a back panel cut wider than the body needs, with the extra leather folded into a vertical pleat behind each shoulder. The pleats are anchored at the top and bottom, so they lie flat when you stand and open when you reach forward. An underarm gusset is a small insert set where the sleeve seam meets the side seam. It adds reach under the arm without making the whole jacket bigger.

Both take more cutting and stitching time than a plain back: the pleats must fold evenly on both sides, and the gusset must be set without puckering. The return is movement. A plain-back A-2 tightens across the shoulder blades when you grip a steering wheel or reach for a high shelf. That pull is normal, and the plain back looks cleaner and sits flatter, but it is the A-2's main limitation.

One honest note about modern versions: makers mix features, so do not assume a jacket has a bi-swing back just because it is labeled G-1, or that it lacks one because it is labeled A-2. Read the description. On our range, the Men's Cowhide A-2 Flight Jacket with Zip-Out Liner is cut with a bi-swing back and underarm gussets, which gives you the A-2 collar with the reach of a G-1. Our sheepskin-collar G-1s are described with a detachable collar, flap pockets and ribbed cuffs and hem; their descriptions do not list a bi-swing back.

Fit: How Each One Should Feel

Flight jackets are less forgiving than coats because they end in knit ribbing. If the body is too short, the waistband climbs above your belt. If it is too tight around the stomach, the ribbing rolls and rides up. If it is too loose, the leather balloons over the waistband. The G-1 usually reads a little fuller through the chest and back. Run this check zipped, over the thickest layer you plan to wear; for the wider bomber family, see how a bomber jacket should fit.

  1. Waistband: Stand naturally. The ribbing should sit at your belt line or just below it, close against the body without digging in.
  2. Shoulders: The shoulder seam should land on the edge of your shoulder bone. Past it, the sleeves droop and the chest looks boxy.
  3. Reach: Hold your arms out as if gripping a steering wheel. Expect some pull across the back of a plain-back A-2. The waistband should stay at or near your belt, not climb to your navel.
  4. Sleeves: With arms at your sides, the cuff ribbing should sit at the wrist bone with a small, soft stack of leather above it. When you reach, the cuffs should not slide far up your forearm.
  5. Layers: Over a shirt or a mid-weight sweater, the zip should close without strain and the front should lie flat. A thick hoodie usually needs a size up or a made-to-measure chest.
  6. Collar (G-1): Turn the sheepskin collar up and zip to the top. It should close around your neck without the zip pulling or the collar pushing into your jaw.

Measurements That Matter for a Flight Jacket

Take these over a thin shirt with a soft tape, and compare them with our size guide before you order.

Measurement How to take it Why it matters on an A-2 or G-1
Chest Around the fullest part, under the arms, arms relaxed Sets your size and how the front lies when zipped
Stomach Around the widest point at belt height The knit waistband has to close over it without rolling
Shoulders Across the back from one shoulder point to the other Places the shoulder seam on the bone
Sleeve From the shoulder point to the wrist bone, arm slightly bent Short sleeves pull the ribbing up your arm when you reach
Back length From the base of the neck to where you want the waistband The jacket is short by design, so small differences show
Bicep Around the fullest part of the upper arm Flight jacket sleeves are trimmer than coat sleeves

Back length is the one most people skip. Our lightweight cowhide A-2 is listed at 27 inches long, so measure from the base of your neck to your belt to see where its waistband will land.

Most of our A-2 and G-1 styles are cut as relaxed bomber fits, so most people take their usual size. If your measurements fall between sizes, or you have long arms on a shorter body, go made to measure: pick "Customise Size (made to measure)" as your size, then email info@whiteburaq.com with your order number and measurements. Made-to-measure jackets take about 2 weeks, with express delivery taking 3 to 5 business days in the US and 5 to 8 elsewhere, and sizes go up to 8XL. One trade-off to weigh: standard sizes, including made-to-order pieces, can be returned within 30 days of delivery if unworn with tags, while made-to-measure pieces are final sale. If a standard size fits your numbers, it keeps that return option open.

Warmth and Seasons

Neither jacket is a deep-winter coat on its own. The G-1's advantage is at the neck: the sheepskin collar closes the gap where a short jacket loses heat. Body warmth depends far more on the lining than on the pattern. Our lightweight cowhide A-2 has a polyester twill lining and suits fall and spring. The cowhide A-2 with zip-out liner adds a pile liner and snap-off pile collar for colder weeks; our guide to zip-out liners explains when that is worth having.

Check the hand pockets too. The original A-2 has only its two patch pockets, which are awkward for cold hands. Our lightweight cowhide A-2 adds side-entry hand-warmer pockets below the patch pockets, and our black leather G-1 has flap pockets with side entry. If you walk a lot in cold weather, that detail matters more than the collar.

Style: Which One Suits You

The A-2 is the easier jacket to dress. Its flat collar and trim profile work with an oxford shirt, a crew-neck sweater, chinos or dark jeans, and it does not overwhelm a smaller frame or a shorter neck. The G-1 is more rugged: the sheepskin collar adds width at the shoulders, which balances a broad frame and suits heavy knits, denim and boots. Distressed brown is the classic color for both; black reads more modern.

Which Should You Buy? A Decision Checklist

  • Choose the A-2 if you want one leather jacket for most of the year, you dress it up as often as down, or you prefer a flat collar under a scarf.
  • Choose the G-1 if you face wind and cold, you like a collar that frames the face, or you want a fuller, more rugged look.
  • Choose an A-2 with a bi-swing back if you drive a lot, cycle, reach overhead at work or simply dislike feeling restricted across the back.
  • Go custom if you want a combination neither pattern offers, such as a sheepskin collar on an A-2 body or a different pocket layout. A fully custom leather jacket is quoted from $199. Custom designs take about 2 weeks, and more detailed pieces take 3 to 4 weeks.

How Each One Breaks In

A new flight jacket in genuine leather feels stiffest at the elbows and across the back. Our lambskin G-1 feels soft from the first wear. Cowhide takes a few weeks of regular wear to shape itself to your elbows and shoulders, and the creases that form there are what give a well-worn A-2 its character. The knit cuffs and waistband are the first parts of any flight jacket to show wear. They are sewn in as separate pieces, so a leather repair shop can replace them without touching the leather shell.

FAQ

Is the G-1 warmer than the A-2?

Around the neck, yes, because the sheepskin collar blocks wind where the A-2's flat collar leaves a gap. Through the body, the lining decides, so an A-2 with a zip-out liner can be warmer overall than a G-1 with a light lining.

Can you wear a G-1 without the sheepskin collar?

On our G-1 jackets with sheepskin collars, yes. The collar is detachable, so you can wear the jacket without it on milder days and put it back on when the wind picks up.

Should an A-2 fit tight?

Close, not tight. It should zip over a shirt or a mid-weight sweater, the waistband should sit at your belt line, and you should be able to reach forward with only a mild pull across the back.

Can I get an A-2 with a sheepskin collar?

Our Men's Distressed Brown A-2 Leather Bomber with Removable Collar comes with a removable sherpa collar (a soft pile, not sheepskin), so you can wear it either way. For a sheepskin collar on an A-2 body, a custom order is the way to get it.

Still deciding? Put the A-2 and G-1 side by side in our bomber and flight jackets collection, check your numbers against the size guide, and pick the one that matches the weather you actually live in.
