A distressed leather jacket looks like it's already had years of adventures. That lived-in character is created on purpose.

What is distressed leather?

Distressed leather is leather finished to look aged. Makers use techniques such as hand rubbing, tumbling in drums, layering two tones of dye, and waxing or buffing high points so the colour varies across the surface. The result is a soft, broken-in leather with a vintage look from day one.

How distressed leather looks and feels

Expect uneven colour, with lighter areas on seams, edges and high points, and a soft, relaxed hand. Because the look is already weathered, everyday scuffs blend in rather than stand out.

Pros and cons

  • Pros: vintage character immediately, hides scuffs and marks, usually soft with little break-in.
  • Cons: not for a sleek, uniform look; colour varies from piece to piece.

How to care for distressed leather

Wipe off dust and dirt, condition when it feels dry, and don't worry about small scuffs, since they add to the look. Test any product on a hidden area first, as some conditioners can darken distressed finishes.

Distressed vs pull-up leather

Distressed leather is aged during finishing. Pull-up leather changes as you wear it. Many vintage-style jackets combine both.

Distressed leather at White Buraq

Many of our jackets come in distressed brown, including our distressed brown A-2 bomber and distressed brown steerhide vintage jacket. Colours vary slightly from piece to piece, so each one is unique.

How distressed leather ages

A distressed jacket starts out looking worn, and it keeps changing from there. The lighter areas on seams, edges and high points get a little lighter with wear, creases form at the elbows and across the back, and the leather softens and takes the shape of your shoulders. Small scuffs and scratches blend into the existing finish rather than standing out, which is why distressed leather is so easy to live with.

How much it changes depends on the hide underneath. Distressed lambskin softens quickly and drapes; distressed cowhide, buffalo or horsehide changes more slowly and forms deeper, bolder creases. If the leather is also waxed or oiled, it will show some pull-up, lightening where it bends.

How the distressed look is made

There isn't one single method. Depending on the style, a distressed finish can come from layering a lighter base dye under a darker top coat, hand rubbing or buffing the high points, tumbling the leather in drums to soften it, or waxing and then polishing selected areas. Because much of this is done by hand, colour and shading vary from one piece to the next. That variation is part of the look, not a defect.

Choosing a distressed jacket

  • Flight and bomber jackets: the classic home of distressed brown, from A-2s to sheepskin B-3s. See our bomber and flight jackets.
  • Work and trucker jackets: a distressed finish suits the heritage workwear look. Browse our trucker and workwear jackets.
  • Cafe racers and moto jackets: a distressed finish softens the sharp lines of a riding jacket and makes it feel less formal.
  • Colour: distressed brown is the classic, but distressing also works on black, tan and other shades.

Caring for the finish over the years

The aim with distressed leather is to keep it supple, not to make it look new. Wipe off dust and mud with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and condition it when the leather starts to feel dry, usually a few times a year. Use a light conditioner and test it on a hidden spot first, since heavy creams and oils can darken the lighter, worn-looking areas and flatten the contrast. Hang the jacket on a wide hanger so the shoulders keep their shape, and let it dry naturally if it gets wet. Scuffs that appear over time are part of the character.

Frequently asked questions

Is distressed leather real leather?

Yes. Distressing is a finish applied to real leather to give it a worn, vintage look.

Does distressed leather wear out faster?

No. The finish is on the surface; the leather underneath is as strong as the hide it comes from.

Can you condition distressed leather?

Yes, but test first on a hidden spot, since some conditioners darken the finish.

Will my distressed jacket look exactly like the photo?

Very close, but not identical. Distressing is partly done by hand, so shading varies slightly from piece to piece.

Related leather types

  • Pull-up (waxed & oiled): Pull-up leather is packed with oils and waxes, so it lightens where it's bent or stretched.
  • Buffalo: Buffalo leather has a bold, pebbled grain and serious strength.
  • Steerhide: Steerhide is thick, even and tough, which is why it has been a favourite for motorcycle and heritage jackets for generations.
  • Horsehide: Horsehide is dense, smooth and incredibly tough.
