Made-to-Measure Leather Jackets: A Special-Order Guide for Stores

Made-to-Measure Leather Jackets: A Special-Order Guide for Stores

Men's black leather asymmetrical biker jacket offered as a made-to-measure special order

Every store has the customer who loves a jacket on the rack but cannot find one that fits: the sleeves are short, the chest pulls, or the size simply is not made. Offering made-to-measure leather jackets at the counter turns that lost sale into an order, and you do not need a sewing room to do it. What you need is a clear process, a few simple tools, and a maker who can work from your notes.

Quick answer: Pick a few base styles, train staff to take a standard set of body measurements, let customers choose leather and color from swatches, quote in writing, collect a deposit under clear terms, and send a complete order sheet to your maker. Book a pickup fitting so small adjustments happen before the customer leaves.

Why offer made-to-measure leather jackets in a store?

Special orders solve a problem that stock alone cannot. A shopper who is long in the arm, broad in the shoulder, or well beyond the usual size range often leaves empty-handed. Made-to-measure gives you a reason to say yes.

It also changes the conversation at the counter. Instead of hunting for a size, you are helping a customer choose a style, a hide, a color, and a lining. That kind of service builds loyalty and word of mouth, and it lets you sell styles you do not need to carry in every size.

What do you need at the counter to take a special order?

Keep the kit small and keep it in one place, so any staff member can run a special order without hunting for parts.

  • A soft tape measure and a printed measurement form with a diagram.
  • Fit samples of your base styles in a few sizes, so the customer can try a shape before you measure.
  • Leather and color swatches on a ring or board, labeled with your maker's color codes.
  • Lining and hardware options, either physical samples or clear photos.
  • An order sheet with the style, options, measurements, quote, deposit, and pickup details.
  • A phone or tablet to photograph the customer in the fit sample, front, side, and back, with their permission.

How do you take measurements for a custom leather jacket?

Use the same order every time and write each number down as you go. Measure over a thin shirt, not a sweater, and ask the customer to stand relaxed with arms down.

  1. Chest: around the fullest part, tape level under the arms.
  2. Waist: around the natural waist, and note where the customer wears their belt.
  3. Hips or seat: around the widest part, important for longer styles and coats.
  4. Shoulder width: from shoulder point to shoulder point across the back.
  5. Sleeve length: from the shoulder point down to the wrist bone, arm slightly bent.
  6. Bicep: around the fullest part of the upper arm.
  7. Back length: from the base of the collar to where the jacket should end.
  8. Height and weight, plus notes on posture, such as rounded shoulders or a forward stance.

Then add preference notes: snug or relaxed fit, layered over a hoodie or a T-shirt, sleeves full length or slightly short for riding. If you want a reference to share with staff, our consumer guide on measuring for a leather jacket walks through each step, and the size chart for our jackets helps you sanity-check the numbers.

How should customers choose leather and color?

Too many choices slow a sale. Offer a short menu and let customers go further only if they ask.

Start with the leather. Lambskin is soft and light, cowhide and buffalo feel heavier and more rugged, and goatskin sits between them. Hand the customer each swatch so they feel the difference. Then show color. Our leather color chart lists 48 shades with WB-C codes; write the code on the order sheet rather than a name like "dark brown," so there is no guesswork later.

Remind customers that genuine leather is a natural material. A swatch shows the shade and finish, but the finished jacket can vary slightly from hide to hide.

Which styles work best for special orders?

Choose two to four base styles that you already know fit well and that customers ask for most. A classic biker, a women's fitted biker, and a trucker or bomber cover a wide range of shoppers. Below are styles a store can stock, offer as special orders, or put under its own label.

Keep one floor sample of each base style in a middle size. Customers try it on, you note what to change, and the maker works from the same pattern your sample came from.

How do you quote and take a deposit?

Quote in writing before you take any money. The quote should list the style, leather, color code, lining, any personalization, the price, the expected pickup window from your maker, and what happens if the customer changes their mind.

Many retailers take a deposit on special orders, because a jacket cut to one person's measurements is hard to resell. The amount and refund terms are your decision; consumer rules vary by state, so put your policy on the order sheet and have the customer sign it. Collect the balance at pickup.

For pricing, work from your wholesale cost. At White Buraq, wholesale for store stock is 50% of retail. Our guide to pricing leather jackets in a boutique covers how to set special-order prices alongside your rack prices.

How do you hand the order off to the maker?

A clean handoff prevents most fit problems. Send everything in one message:

  • The completed measurement form, with units marked.
  • Style name or product handle, leather type, WB-C color code, lining, and hardware finish.
  • Fit photos of the customer in the floor sample, with notes on what to change.
  • Any personalization, such as initials or a patch, and confirmation that the customer owns or is authorized to use any logo or artwork.
  • Your order reference and the customer's pickup date.

Our made-to-measure program makes jackets from a customer's own measurements within two weeks. Confirm details in writing with your maker before you promise a date to the customer, and leave a buffer for shipping.

How do you handle hard-to-fit and big & tall customers?

These customers are often the most grateful, and the most likely to return. Treat them as a planned part of the program, not an exception.

Many big and tall shoppers do not need a fully custom jacket; they need a size that is rarely made. White Buraq leather sizes run up to 8XL in regular and tall, with no development charge for larger sizes, so you can order a standard size for some customers and switch to made-to-measure only when proportions call for it. See our extended sizing for retailers for the details.

For truly hard fits, such as one shoulder lower than the other, a large chest with a narrow waist, or very long arms on a slim frame, note it plainly on the form and include photos. The more the maker sees, the fewer surprises at pickup. If special orders show you which sizes keep coming up, use that to adjust your size run for leather jackets on the rack.

What happens at the pickup fitting?

Book the pickup as a short appointment rather than a grab-and-go. Have the customer try the jacket on in front of a mirror and check the basics: shoulders sit at the shoulder point, sleeves reach the wrist with the arm bent, the jacket closes without pulling, and the customer can raise both arms comfortably.

Explain that genuine leather relaxes and shapes to the body with wear, so a jacket that feels a little firm on day one often settles in. Hand over care instructions, take a photo for your records if the customer agrees, and note anything you would change next time on the order sheet.

Planning an order? Wholesale orders start from 5 pieces per style with sizes mixed, a single special-order jacket can go through our custom builder, and a sample is made before every new style.

FAQ

Do I need a tailor on staff to offer special orders?

No. Staff can learn to take a standard set of measurements in a short training session. The pattern work and cutting happen at the maker's workshop.

Can a customer order a style I do not carry?

Yes. A customer can share a photo or sketch, and our pattern master drafts a pattern for it. A sample is made before any new style goes into production.

What if the jacket does not fit at pickup?

Check the order sheet against the jacket first, then send photos and notes to your maker. Clear measurements and fit photos at the start make this rare.

Can I put my store's label on special-order jackets?

Yes. Woven neck labels, hang tags, custom linings, and garment bags are all available, so special orders can carry your own label.

A simple counter process, good swatches, and a reliable maker are all it takes to add made-to-measure leather jackets to your store. Browse our full range of men's leather jackets to choose your base styles.
