A2 vs B3 Jacket: How Two Classic Flight Jackets Differ

Men's cowhide A-2 flight jacket and distressed brown sheepskin B-3 bomber jacket

The A2 vs B3 jacket question mostly comes down to how cold it gets where you live. Both are American military flight jackets from the early 1930s, both usually come in rich brown leather, and both still look right today. One is a trim leather jacket for three seasons, though, and the other is a heavy sheepskin jacket built for flying in freezing air.

Quick answer: The A-2 is a lightweight leather flight jacket with a shirt-style collar, knit cuffs and waistband, and snap-flap pockets, made for mild and cool weather. The B-3 is a heavy sheepskin bomber worn with the wool inside, a large strapped collar and far more warmth. Pick the A-2 for layering and the B-3 for real winter cold.

The A-2 flight jacket: history and design

The US Army Air Corps adopted the Type A-2 on May 9, 1931, under specification 94-3040. It replaced the button-front A-1 and became the standard leather jacket for pilots and aircrew through the 1930s and into the Second World War.

Early A-2s were cut from chrome-tanned horsehide, typically in seal brown or russet. As wartime demand grew, cowhide was approved in 1940 and goatskin in 1941. If you're curious how those hides compare today, our horsehide vs cowhide guide breaks it down.

The design is simple and practical:

  • Shirt-style collar in leather, with snaps to hold the points down and a hook at the throat.
  • Center front zip, a modern touch for the time.
  • Knit wool cuffs and waistband that seal out drafts and keep the jacket sitting at the waist.
  • Two patch pockets with snap-down flaps.
  • Epaulettes, or shoulder straps, sewn in at the shoulder seams.

New orders for the A-2 wound down around 1943 as cloth flight jackets took over, but crews kept wearing theirs, often adding squadron patches and hand-painted artwork. The A-2 jacket entry on Wikipedia covers the full procurement history.

The B-3 bomber jacket: history and design

The B-3 was standardized in 1934 for bomber crews flying at high altitude. Their aircraft were unpressurized and poorly heated, and at around 25,000 feet the air could drop to roughly minus 58°F. A leather jacket on its own could not keep up.

The answer was sheepskin, worn with the wool facing in and the leather side out. The dense fleece traps a layer of warm air next to the body while the hide blocks the wind. Key details include:

  • Heavy sheepskin body with the wool lining every panel.
  • Oversized wool collar that turns up around the face and closes with two leather straps and buckles.
  • Waist strap or belt on many examples, used to cinch the hem against drafts.
  • Roomy, straight cut so it could go over uniforms and other layers.

The B-3 was too bulky for tight fighter cockpits, so it was mostly worn by bomber crews. Lighter sheepskin designs arrived later in the war, but the B-3 remains the classic picture of a wartime bomber jacket.

Key differences between the A-2 and B-3

Warmth

This is the big one. An A-2 is a wind-blocking leather layer that feels right on cool days, especially over a sweater. A B-3 is winter outerwear. Many people find it too warm once the temperature climbs much above 40°F.

Weight and bulk

An A-2 is light enough to carry over your arm and slim enough to wear under a longer coat. A B-3 is heavy and adds visible volume to your frame, so it is meant to be the outermost layer.

Collar and look

The A-2's flat shirt collar looks clean and understated. The B-3's big wool collar is its signature, and it gives the jacket a rugged, cold-weather character even when left open.

Care

An A-2 needs the same care as any leather jacket. A B-3 has two surfaces to look after: condition the leather side and brush the wool gently to keep it lofty. Our sheepskin leather guide covers how the material behaves.

Which should you buy?

Choose an A-2 if your winters are mild, you want one jacket for most of the year, or you prefer a trim silhouette that works with chinos and a shirt as easily as jeans.

Choose a B-3 if you face real winters with wind and freezing mornings, you want a jacket that replaces a heavy coat, or you love the rugged look of a big wool collar.

Our Men's Distressed Brown Lightweight Cowhide A-2 Flight Jacket brings the A-2 shape to cowhide, one of the leathers approved for the original. The men's and women's distressed brown sheepskin B-3 jackets carry the warm, wool-lined build of the wartime design. If you like the A-2 but need a little more warmth, the cowhide A-2 with a zip-out liner is a useful middle ground.

How to wear an A-2 and a B-3

An A-2 is easy. Wear it with a T-shirt or an oxford shirt, chinos or dark jeans, and boots or clean sneakers. Let the knit waistband sit at your belt line and avoid thick hoodies underneath, which bunch at the hem.

A B-3 already has plenty of volume, so keep everything else streamlined. Slim or straight jeans, a flannel shirt or thin knit and sturdy boots balance the jacket. Turn the collar up and fasten the straps on windy days, and leave it open indoors. For more outfit ideas, see our guide on what to wear with a leather jacket.

Sizing tips for flight jackets

  • A-2: order your usual size with room for a sweater. The knit waistband should sit at the top of the hips without riding up when you lift your arms.
  • B-3: the wool takes up space inside, so measure your chest over the layer you'll actually wear. Avoid sizing up too far, or the jacket gets boxy.
  • Sleeves: on both, the cuff should reach the base of your thumb.

Check your numbers against our size guide. If you're between sizes, choose "Customise Size (made to measure)" on the product page, then email info@whiteburaq.com with your order number and measurements. The made-to-measure page explains the process, including that made-to-measure pieces can't be returned.

FAQ

Is a B-3 warmer than an A-2?

Yes, by a wide margin. The B-3 is sheepskin with the wool on the inside, built for freezing air, while the A-2 is a single layer of leather with a light lining.

Is the A-2 a bomber jacket?

Strictly, it's a flight jacket issued to pilots and aircrew of all kinds. Today "bomber jacket" is used loosely for most short leather flight jackets, so you'll see the A-2 called both.

Can you wear an A-2 in winter?

In mild winters, yes, with a warm sweater underneath. For hard winters, a sheepskin jacket like the B-3 or an A-2 with a zip-out liner is the better choice.

What are the straps on a B-3 collar for?

They close the collar snugly around the neck and lower face, keeping wind out. Today they're mostly left open, but they still work on cold, windy days.

Whichever side of the A2 vs B3 jacket debate you land on, both have lasted nearly a century for good reason. Browse our bomber and flight jackets for A-2 styles, or explore our shearling jackets for B-3 warmth.
