How to Get Wrinkles Out of a Leather Jacket Without Damage

Black lambskin asymmetrical moto jacket and women's dark brown trucker leather jacket

A leather jacket that has spent a few weeks folded in a suitcase or squeezed into the back of a closet can come out looking tired, with fold lines across the back and crumpled sleeves. The good news is that leather relaxes with time, gentle moisture and a little warmth. Here is how to get wrinkles out of a leather jacket safely, starting with the gentlest method and working up only if you need to.

Quick answer: Hang the jacket on a wide, shaped hanger and give it a few days to relax. For stubborn creases, use gentle steam from a distance, such as a steamy bathroom, then smooth the leather by hand. A low iron through a thick cloth is a careful last resort. Never soak leather or apply direct heat.

Why leather jackets wrinkle

Genuine leather is a web of natural fibers. When it is folded or pressed for a long time, especially somewhere warm or slightly humid, those fibers settle into the new shape and hold it. Soft, thin leathers crease faster than heavy, firm ones, and a jacket packed tightly or hung on a thin wire hanger will show it first.

The wrinkles this guide deals with are storage and travel wrinkles: sharp fold lines, hanger dents and general crumpling. The soft creases that form at the elbows and waist from everyday wear are a different thing, and we will come back to those.

How to get wrinkles out of a leather jacket: 4 safe methods

Work through these in order and stop as soon as the creases are gone.

Method 1: Hang it and let gravity do the work

Always start here, because it carries no risk. Put the jacket on a wide, shaped hanger that fills out the shoulders, close the zip or buttons so the front hangs straight, and give it space in the closet so nothing presses against it. The weight of the leather slowly pulls the creases out.

Light wrinkles often disappear in a day or two. Deeper fold lines can take a week. You can speed things up by smoothing the creased areas with your palms once or twice a day, since the warmth of your hands softens the leather slightly.

Method 2: Use gentle steam from a distance

Moisture and mild warmth relax leather fibers, which is why steam works, as long as it stays gentle and indirect. The easiest version needs no equipment at all:

  1. Hang the jacket in the bathroom, outside the shower and well away from the spray.
  2. Run a hot shower with the door closed for 10 to 15 minutes so the room fills with steam.
  3. Turn off the water and leave the jacket in the warm, humid air for a few more minutes.
  4. Take it out, smooth the creases gently with your hands, and let it hang at normal room temperature until it is completely dry.

A handheld garment steamer gives more control, but it needs care. Hold it at least a foot away from the leather, keep it moving, and never let the nozzle touch the surface. The aim is to warm the leather slightly, not to wet it. If you see droplets forming, stop and let the jacket dry before trying again.

Method 3: Condition to relax stubborn creases

Dry leather holds a crease far more stubbornly than supple leather. A good leather conditioner restores some of the oils that keep the fibers flexible, so creases soften and smooth out more easily. Test it first on a hidden area, such as the inside of the front facing, then work a thin layer into the wrinkled area with a soft cloth in small circles. Let it absorb, buff off any excess and hang the jacket up again.

Conditioning pairs well with steam: steam first, let the leather dry fully, then condition. Our guide on how to condition a leather jacket covers products and technique in more detail.

Method 4: Iron through a thick cloth (last resort)

Ironing leather is risky, and most wrinkles never need it. If a sharp crease has survived hanging, steam and conditioning, you can try this carefully:

  • Set the iron to its lowest heat setting, switch off the steam function and empty the water tank.
  • Lay the jacket flat on an ironing board and cover the wrinkle with a thick, clean cotton cloth, such as a folded towel.
  • Test on a hidden spot first and check for shine, darkening or any sticky feel.
  • Press lightly for two or three seconds, lift and check. Keep the iron moving and never let it rest in one place.
  • Let the leather cool completely before you move or wear the jacket, so the smoothed area sets.

Skip the iron entirely on suede, metallic, patent or heavily finished leather, and on anything with a deliberately textured surface, such as our Women's Burgundy Crinkled Lambskin Leather Jacket. That crinkle is part of the design, and heat can flatten, mark or dull these finishes for good.

When to use a professional leather cleaner

Deep creases in an older jacket, wrinkles combined with stains or dryness, or a jacket you simply don't want to risk are good reasons to hand it to a specialist leather cleaner. They have controlled steaming and pressing equipment and can recondition the whole garment evenly.

Creases worth keeping

Not every line needs to go. Distressed and vintage-finish jackets are made to look lived in, and heavier hides develop natural creases at the elbows, inner arms and waist that deepen into character as the jacket breaks in. Those creases are how a jacket starts to look like yours, so there is no need to steam them away. If a new jacket feels stiff, our guide on how to soften a leather jacket will help it mold to you faster.

Getting wrinkles out of suede

Suede has a soft, napped surface, so it needs a slightly different approach. Gentle steam from a distance is the most effective method, because the moisture relaxes the fibers and lifts flattened nap at the same time. Once the jacket is dry, brush it with a suede brush in one direction to restore the texture.

Never iron suede, and don't use creamy leather conditioners on it, since they can darken and mat the nap. Use products made specifically for suede. Our suede leather guide explains how the material differs from smooth leather.

What not to do

  • No direct heat. Hair dryers held close, radiators, heaters and clothes dryers can dry out and shrink leather, leaving it stiff and prone to cracking.
  • No soaking. Spraying leather until it is wet, or dunking it, can leave water marks and stiffness as it dries. If your jacket does get caught in a downpour, see our advice on wearing a leather jacket in the rain.
  • No iron without a barrier, and never use the iron's own steam function on leather.

How to prevent wrinkles in the first place

  • Store the jacket on a wide, shaped hanger, never wire, with room around it. Our guide on how to store a leather jacket covers seasonal storage.
  • Use a breathable cotton garment bag rather than plastic.
  • When traveling, fold the jacket loosely along its seams with tissue paper or a soft T-shirt in the folds, and hang it as soon as you arrive.
  • Empty heavy pockets so they don't drag the front out of shape.
  • Get the fit right. A jacket that is too tight across the back or shoulders creases every time you move, so check our size guide before you order.

FAQ

Can you iron a leather jacket?

Only as a last resort. Use the lowest heat with the steam off, press through a thick cotton cloth for a few seconds at a time, and test a hidden spot first. Never iron suede, metallic or patent finishes.

How long does it take for wrinkles to fall out of a leather jacket?

Light wrinkles usually relax within a day or two on a wide hanger. Deep fold lines can take a week or more, and gentle steam speeds things up.

Does steam damage leather?

Gentle, indirect steam is generally safe for most leather jackets. Problems come from holding a steamer too close, letting water droplets form or leaving the leather damp, so always let it dry naturally at room temperature.

Can I use a hair dryer to get wrinkles out of leather?

It is best avoided. A hair dryer concentrates heat on one spot and can dry out or discolor the leather. Steam from a distance is a much safer choice.

Most of the time, learning how to get wrinkles out of a leather jacket comes down to patience: a good hanger, a little steam and an occasional conditioning. Treat the leather gently and, with care, it will stay smooth and supple for many years. For the rest of your care routine, read our guide on how to clean a leather jacket.
