How to Wear a Leather Skirt in Winter: Tights, Boots and Fit

How to Wear a Leather Skirt in Winter: Tights, Boots and Fit

Women's Dark Brown Sheepskin Midi Pencil Skirt, a leather skirt for winter with tights and boots

Yes, you can wear a leather skirt in winter, and it is one of the more practical skirts for cold weather, because leather stops the wind that passes straight through knits and cotton. What it can't do is warm your legs, so a winter outfit is built around opaque tights, boots that meet or overlap the hem, and a warm top half. Below is how we pair each skirt length with boots, which tights to choose by temperature, and how to check the fit when you'll wear tights and a tucked sweater with it.

Quick answer: Yes. Leather blocks wind but doesn't insulate, so pair it with opaque tights of 60 denier or more (fleece-lined below freezing), boots that close the gap between hem and shaft, and a warm knit tucked in or cropped. Choose midi or maxi lengths for the coldest days and keep suede away from slush.

Is a leather skirt warm enough for winter?

On a windy day, warmer than most skirts, with one catch. Genuine leather is a dense hide rather than a woven cloth, so wind doesn't blow through it the way it does through a knit or cotton twill, and our skirts add a satin lining on top. Neither traps much heat, though. Leather keeps the wind off; it doesn't insulate like a wool coat or a quilted layer.

So the skirt blocks wind across your hips and thighs, and everything below the hem has to be dressed for the weather. That is why length matters more than color or cut when it's cold:

  • Maxi lengths cover you to the ankle and leave only your boots to do the rest. They are the warmest choice for a cold commute.
  • Midi lengths end mid-calf, roughly where most tall boots end, so hem and boot overlap and close the gap.
  • Mini and knee-length skirts leave your thighs to your tights alone. They still work, but they need your heaviest tights and tallest boots.

The lining matters in winter for another reason. Leather and suede grip nylon, so an unlined skirt tends to creep up and twist as you walk in tights. A satin lining lets the skirt slide over them and hang straight from the waist.

Tights for a leather skirt in winter

Tights do most of the warming, and the number to look at on the pack is the denier, a measure of how heavy the yarn is. The higher the number, the thicker, more opaque and warmer the tights. As a rough guide, anything under 20 denier is sheer, around 40 denier reads as opaque, and 60 to 100 denier is what you want for a cold day outdoors. Below freezing, look for fleece-lined tights, or wear thin thermal leggings under a midi or maxi, where nobody will see them.

Outside temperature Tights Skirt lengths that work Boots
50s °F 40 denier Any length Ankle boots or loafers with socks
40s °F 60 to 80 denier Midi, maxi, or a mini with knee-high boots Knee-high or tall boots
30s °F 100 denier or fleece-lined Midi or maxi Tall boots, or lined ankle boots under a maxi
Below 30 °F, or snow Fleece-lined, or thermal leggings underneath Maxi or midi in smooth leather Waterproof tall boots with a grippy sole

For the rest of the outfit at the in-between temperatures, our guide on what to wear in 40 degree weather goes layer by layer.

Color is simpler than it looks:

  • Black leather: black opaque tights and black boots make one unbroken line from waist to toe, which makes your legs look longer.
  • Brown or tan: chocolate or espresso tights look richer than black and soften the contrast with brown boots.
  • Burgundy or olive: black tights keep it grounded, while tights in the same shade as the skirt make a bolder tonal look.
  • Metallic: keep the tights plain and opaque so the skirt stays the only shiny thing in the outfit.

Match your boots to the hemline

The rule we give anyone wearing a skirt in the cold: the hem should cover the top of the boot, or the gap between them should be filled with tights in the same color as the boot. A strip of bare leg, or of contrasting tights, between a midi hem and an ankle boot is where you feel the cold first, and it also cuts the leg at its widest point.

Skirt length Where the hem lands Boots that work What to watch
Mini Mid-thigh Over-the-knee or knee-high boots; chunky ankle boots with opaque tights Wear your heaviest tights; the thigh is fully exposed to wind
Knee-length At or just below the knee Knee-high boots, so the hem overlaps the shaft A shaft that ends exactly at the hem looks cut off; aim for an inch or two of overlap
Midi Mid-calf Tall boots whose shaft disappears under the hem; ankle boots with tights matched to the boot The hem rises when you sit, so check the gap in a chair too
Maxi Ankle Lace-up, lug-sole or pull-on ankle boots The hem should clear the ground in your boots, or it will drag through slush

Slits matter more in winter than in summer, because tall boots and thick tights make a full stride harder. A straight pencil skirt needs a back or front slit so you can walk and climb steps. The top of a slit takes all the strain when you step up onto a curb or a bus, which is why it is reinforced when the skirt is made. If a slit starts pulling open at the top, the skirt is too tight across the hips, not too short in the slit. A-line and pleated skirts flare enough that they don't need one.

What to wear on top

Knits. Fine-gauge sweaters and thin turtlenecks tuck flat into a high waist and keep the line clean. A chunky knit adds real bulk at the waistband, so wear it loose over the skirt, choose a cropped one that ends at the waistband, or tuck in just the front.

Jackets and coats. A short jacket that stops at the waist suits midi and maxi skirts because it shows off the high waistband: a biker, a cropped bomber or one of our shearling jackets. A long coat works with any length as long as its hem lands clearly longer than the skirt or well above it. A coat and a skirt that end at the same point look like an accident.

Leather with leather. A leather jacket over a leather skirt works best when the color or texture changes: black smooth leather over a brown suede skirt, or a brown jacket over a black skirt. The same principles apply as in our guide to wearing double leather.

Five winter outfits built around a leather skirt

  1. Office, 40s °F: a dark brown midi pencil skirt, a cream fine-gauge turtleneck tucked in, espresso 80-denier tights, knee-high brown boots and a camel coat that falls well past the hem.
  2. Weekend errands: a black A-line maxi with a chunky gray sweater worn loose, lug-sole ankle boots and a short black leather jacket.
  3. Holiday party: a burgundy midi with a black silk blouse, 40-denier black tights for a warm room and heeled ankle boots, plus a long black coat for the trip there and back.
  4. Snow day: a smooth black leather midi with thermal leggings underneath, waterproof tall boots and a hip-length puffer or shearling jacket.
  5. Dry, bright cold: a brown suede A-line midi with a cream cable knit half-tucked, chocolate tights and tall brown boots.

Three skirts that cover most of these looks: a fitted sheepskin pencil for the office, an elastic-waist maxi for the coldest days and a belted suede A-line for dry ones.

How should a leather skirt fit with tights and a sweater?

Winter changes the fit more than people expect. Opaque tights add a little at the waist and hips, a tucked knit adds more at the waistband, and you'll sit in the skirt for hours in warm offices. Fit it for the way you'll actually wear it.

Most of our skirts are sized by waist in inches, and a few by US dress or letter size. Either way, measure where the waistband will sit, which on a high-waisted style is the narrowest part of your torso, over your tights and the thinnest top you plan to tuck in. Then check your hips at the fullest point against our size guide. Leather relaxes a little across the seat and hips as it warms to you, but the waistband barely moves, because it is backed to hold its line. A waistband that pinches on day one will still pinch in February.

In our workshop, a pencil skirt gets its shape from panel seams and darts that run from the waist over the hips, so that is where the fit lives. Fit the hips first. A tailor who works with leather can take in a waist by sewing just inside the old stitch line, but letting a seam out leaves the old needle holes showing, because every hole in leather is permanent. Elastic-waist styles are the exception: size those for your hips and length, since the waist adjusts.

A six-step winter fit check

  1. Dress for it. Put on the tights and the top you'll tuck in, plus the boots you'll wear most.
  2. Waistband. You should be able to slide two fingers flat inside the waistband with the top tucked, and the top edge shouldn't roll.
  3. Zip. A back zip should lie flat. A rippled zip or a gap at the top means the waist or hips are too tight.
  4. Hips and seat. The side seams should hang straight down, with no horizontal pull lines across the front or under the seat.
  5. Sit for five minutes. The waistband shouldn't dig in, and the hem shouldn't ride so high that the gap above your boots opens up.
  6. Stairs. Step up onto a stair in your boots. On a pencil skirt, the slit should open without the top of it straining.

Standard sizes can be returned within 30 days of delivery as long as they are unworn with the tags attached, so do this check indoors on clean tights. If one size fits your waist and the next fits your hips, or you want the hem to land at an exact point on your boot, made to measure is the cleaner answer. Choose "Customise Size (made to measure)" as your size, then email info@whiteburaq.com with your order number, your waist and hip measurements, and the length from your waistline to where you want the hem, measured standing in your boots. Made-to-measure pieces ship within 3–7 business days, and express delivery then takes 3–5 business days in the US and 5–8 elsewhere. Because they are cut for you, they are final sale.

Winter care: salt, slush and radiators

  • Wipe the hem when you get in. Road salt and slush splash the bottom few inches of a midi or maxi. Wipe it with a barely damp cloth the same day, before the salt dries into white marks.
  • Dry it slowly. Hang it by the waistband at room temperature, never on a radiator or under a hair dryer; fast heat stiffens leather and can make it crack.
  • Keep suede for dry days. Wet snow and salty slush mark suede easily. Our guide on whether suede can get wet covers protector sprays and what to do if it gets soaked.
  • Let sitting creases drop out. Hang the skirt overnight and its own weight pulls most creases out. Our guide on how to clean a leather skirt covers wiping, conditioning and stubborn wrinkles.

FAQ

Can you wear a leather skirt with bare legs in winter?

For a short dash from car to door, yes. For anything longer outdoors, wear opaque tights of 60 denier or more.

Can you wear a leather mini skirt in winter?

Yes, with 80 to 100 denier or fleece-lined tights and knee-high or over-the-knee boots. It covers the least, so add a long coat for evenings outside.

Is a leather or suede skirt better for winter?

Smooth leather, if you'll meet rain, snow or salty slush, because it wipes clean. Suede is just as warm but marks easily when wet, so save it for dry cold days.

Should I size up in a leather skirt for winter?

Only if your usual size feels tight once you add opaque tights and a tucked sweater. The waistband won't ease with wear, so size for your waist with your winter layers on.

Once the tights, boots and top half are doing their share, a leather skirt carries straight from fall through the coldest weeks of winter. Browse our women's collection for midi, maxi and pencil skirts in smooth leather and suede, and pick the length that suits the boots you already own.
