Most alligator leather comes from the American alligator, farmed and managed mainly in Louisiana and Florida. The species has recovered strongly under managed programmes, and trade in its skins is regulated under CITES, with each skin tagged.
How alligator leather looks and feels
Belly skins have rectangular tiles that run in neat rows, often with a web-like "umbilical scar" pattern in the centre. The leather is supple for an exotic and takes a beautiful glazed or matt finish.
Alligator vs crocodile
The quickest tell is on the belly scales: crocodile scales each carry a small sensory dot, while alligator scales don't. Alligator also often shows the umbilical pattern. Both are prized; alligator is often seen as a little softer.
