What is crocodile leather?
Crocodile leather comes mainly from farmed saltwater and Nile crocodiles. All international trade in crocodile skins is regulated under CITES, so legitimate skins are tagged and travel with permits.
Belly vs hornback
Belly leather comes from the underside and has smooth, rectangular tiles that get smaller towards the sides. It's the most flexible and most expensive cut. Hornback comes from the back and has raised, bony ridges for a rugged, dramatic look.
How to tell crocodile from alligator and caiman
- Crocodile belly scales each have a tiny dot, a sensory pore, near the edge.
- Alligator belly scales have no dots, and there is often a web-like "umbilical scar" in the middle.
- Caiman is a smaller relative with bonier, stiffer scales and a lower price.
