Custom Leather Vest: Fit, Patches, Pockets and How to Order

Men's black leather biker vest and black pebbled cowhide biker vest shown as starting points for a custom design

A custom leather vest is personal in a way few garments are: every panel, pocket and patch can be planned around how you actually wear it. This guide covers what you can change, how patches should go onto leather, how to size a vest for layering and how ordering works, whether it is one vest or a whole group.

Quick answer: You can customize the fit, leather, color, collar, pockets, lining, side lacing, embroidery and patch layout. Have patches sewn on by a leatherworker, never ironed on, and measure over the layers you will wear underneath. Start from an existing vest with made to measure, or request a quote for a fully custom design.

What can you customize on a custom leather vest?

Nearly everything. The useful way to think about it is from the inside out: fit first, then material, then details.

Fit and size

Made to measure takes one of our existing vest designs and cuts it to your measurements instead of a standard size. It suits a broad chest with a narrower waist, a long torso, or anyone planning to wear the vest over something bulky.

Leather, finish and color

Cowhide is heavier and more structured, so a vest holds its shape; lambskin is lighter and softer and drapes more like cloth. Finish changes the look as much as the hide does. Pebbled grain has a textured surface that disguises everyday scuffs, while natural-finish leather carries little surface coating and shows its character as it wears. Black is the classic choice. Brown suits a Western or vintage look.

Collar and front

Choose a shirt-style collar, a band collar or a clean collarless neckline, then a zip, snap or button front. A collarless neckline sits neatly under a jacket or over a hoodie, because it does not fight a second collar.

Pockets, inside and out

Outside, decide between slash, flap or zipped pockets. Inside is where custom really pays off. Ask for pockets sized to what you carry, such as a wallet, glasses or gloves, and say whether they should zip or snap shut. If front patches are planned, mention it so the inside pockets sit clear of that stitching.

Lining and lacing

A smooth lining slides easily over shirts; a quilted one adds warmth on cool evenings. Laced sides are both a look and a practical detail: loosen them over a thick hoodie, tighten them over a tee, and the vest adjusts a little without any change to its cut.

Embroidery, printed text and patch layout

Names, dates or a short motto can be embroidered or printed on the leather, usually on the chest or across the upper back. Larger artwork often works better as a separate patch sewn on afterward. Our guide to a custom leather jacket with a logo compares the main methods, and they apply to vests just as well.

Plan the patch layout before the vest is made. The traditional back layout has three parts: a curved top rocker across the upper back, a center patch, and a bottom rocker beneath it. Smaller name or role patches usually go on the chest. Share the layout early, so the back can be planned as a flat, clear area for large patches, with no pockets or seams in the way.

If you would rather start from an existing design and adjust the fit, these three vests show the range of base styles:

How should patches be attached to a leather vest?

Sew them. Iron-on patches are made for fabric, where heat melts the adhesive into woven fibers. Leather does not take that bond the same way, and the heat needed to activate the glue can scorch, shrink or stiffen the hide. Even when an iron-on patch does stick, it tends to lift with warmth, rain and constant flexing. Glue on its own has the same weakness.

A leatherworker, or a tailor who regularly works with leather, will:

  • Position each patch with tape or clips rather than pins, because every hole in leather is permanent.
  • Use a leather needle with a cutting point, plus strong bonded nylon or polyester thread instead of cotton.
  • Stitch through the leather shell only, working behind the lining where possible so the inside does not pucker.
  • Check what sits behind each patch, so an inside pocket is not stitched shut.

Since needle holes stay, move a patch only if you are ready to cover the old stitch line.

How should a custom leather vest fit over layers?

A vest sits closer to the body than a jacket, so whatever you wear underneath changes the fit more than you might expect.

  • Measure your chest over the layer you will wear most, whether that is a tee, a flannel shirt or a hoodie.
  • If the vest will go over a leather jacket, say so. It needs more room through the chest and deeper armholes.
  • Armholes should clear a sweater or hoodie sleeve without cutting into your underarm.
  • The hem should reach your belt or just cover it. If you will ride in it, a slightly longer back keeps the waistband covered when you lean forward.
  • Closed, the front should hang straight, with no pulling at the snaps or buttons.

Our made-to-measure service page explains which measurements to take.

How do you order a custom leather vest?

There are two routes, depending on how much you want to change.

Made to measure on an existing vest

  1. Choose a vest from our range and select “Customise Size (made to measure)” on the product page.
  2. Place the order, then email info@whiteburaq.com with your order number and measurements.
  3. Made-to-measure pieces ship within 3–7 business days. Express delivery then takes 3–5 business days in the US and 5–8 elsewhere.

A fully custom design

  1. Gather references: sketches, photos, your patch plan and any text for embroidery.
  2. Request a quote through our custom leather jackets page. Every design is quoted individually; for reference, fully custom jackets are quoted from $199 to $499, depending on the design and detailing.
  3. Confirm leather, color, lining, pockets and measurements before production starts.

Our step-by-step guide to designing a custom leather jacket follows the same process and works for vests too.

Please note: custom and made-to-measure pieces cannot be returned, because each one is made for one person. Check your measurements twice, and ask someone to help with the chest and back.

Can a club or group order matching vests?

Yes. Group orders go through our wholesale program, starting from 10 pieces per style in leather. To keep things smooth:

  • Agree on one base style, leather and color for the whole group.
  • Collect everyone’s measurements on one sheet, taken the same way over the same kind of layer.
  • Personalize with embroidered names or roles on the chest rather than changing the cut person by person.
  • Have patches made separately and stitched on to the same layout for everyone once the vests arrive.

FAQ

How much does a custom leather vest cost?

Fully custom designs are quoted individually through our custom page, and the price depends on detailing and embroidery. For reference, fully custom jackets are quoted from $199 to $499. Made to measure on an existing vest is chosen as a sizing option on that vest’s product page.

Can you iron patches onto a leather vest?

It is not a good idea. The heat needed to activate the adhesive can scorch or stiffen leather, and the glue rarely holds through weather and flexing. Have patches stitched on by a leatherworker instead.

Can I return a custom leather vest?

No. Custom and made-to-measure pieces are made to one person’s specifications and cannot be returned, so double-check measurements and design details before you confirm.

What is the minimum for a group vest order?

Wholesale orders start from 10 pieces per style in leather. Share your quantity, style and patch plan through the wholesale page to get started.

A custom leather vest rewards a little planning: settle the fit, the leather and the patch layout first, and the smaller details follow. Pick a starting design from our leather vests, then make it yours.
