Leather Jacket Between Sizes? When to Size Up or Down

Men's lambskin asymmetrical biker jacket

Landing on a leather jacket between sizes is one of the most common fit problems, and the usual advice to simply size up doesn't always hold. Genuine leather behaves differently from cotton or wool, so the right call depends on the style, the hide and how you plan to layer.

Quick answer: Decide by the shoulders first, because they are the hardest part to alter. Size up if you layer thick knits, have broad shoulders or want a relaxed bomber or trucker. Stay true or size down for a fitted biker over a T-shirt, especially in lambskin, which softens. If neither size works, choose made to measure.

Why Being Between Sizes Is Trickier in Leather

Leather gives a little with wear. The fibers relax across the chest and back, and the jacket gradually molds to your shape, especially around the elbows and shoulders. What it doesn't do is grow much in length. Sleeves that are short on day one will stay short, and a body that rides up won't drop.

Fit is also harder to fix afterward. A skilled tailor can take in a side seam or shorten sleeves on some styles, but moving the shoulder seams on a leather jacket is difficult and rarely worth the cost. Our guide on whether leather jackets stretch explains how much give to expect, and tailoring a leather jacket covers which alterations are realistic.

Leather Jacket Between Sizes: Size Up or Down?

Use this table as a starting point, then confirm with the fit tests below.

Your situation Usually go
You layer chunky knits or hoodies Size up
Broad chest or shoulders Size up
Relaxed styles such as bombers and truckers Size up
Heavy, stiff hides such as thick cowhide or horsehide Size up
Fitted biker or cafe racer worn over a T-shirt True size or size down
Soft lambskin that relaxes with wear True size or size down
Only the waist falls between sizes Fit the shoulders and chest

When to Size Up

  • You layer heavily. A hoodie or chunky sweater adds real bulk across the chest and arms. If that's how you'll wear the jacket most of the time, size for the layer, not the T-shirt.
  • Your shoulders or chest are broad. Shoulders are the deciding fit point. If the smaller size pinches at the shoulder seam or stops you reaching forward, it won't loosen enough to matter.
  • The style is meant to be relaxed. Bombers and trucker jackets are cut with some ease. Going up keeps that easy shape instead of turning it into something tight and short.
  • The hide is heavy and stiff. Thick hides soften slowly, so a snug fit can feel restrictive for a long time before it eases.

When to Size Down or Stay True

  • The jacket is a fitted biker or cafe racer. These styles are designed to sit close, and extra room makes them look borrowed. If you'll wear it over a T-shirt or a thin knit and the shoulders fit, take the smaller size.
  • The leather is lambskin. Lambskin relaxes and molds sooner than heavier hides, so a snug fit on day one usually becomes a comfortable one after some regular wear.
  • You're only between sizes at the waist. Fit the shoulders and chest. Many biker styles have a waist belt or side adjusters that take up a little room, and a tailor can often take in a side seam.

These three styles show the range: a fitted lambskin biker you can wear close, a lambskin trucker with a little more ease, and a bomber, a cut usually worn with room to layer.

Six Fit Tests to Run at Home

Try both sizes on, if you can, wearing the layer you'll wear most. Then run these checks:

  1. Shoulder check: the seam should sit at the outer edge of your shoulder bone, not hanging past it or riding up onto the top of the shoulder.
  2. Hug test: cross your arms and reach forward as if hugging someone. Some tightness across the back is normal; straining seams or a zipper pulling open is not.
  3. Arm raise: lift both arms overhead. The cuffs will ride up a little, but they shouldn't jump far up your forearms, and the hem shouldn't lift well above your waist.
  4. Sleeve length: with arms relaxed at your sides, the cuff should land at the wrist bone or slightly below, toward the base of the thumb.
  5. Body length: bikers and cafe racers usually sit at or just above the belt, bombers gather at the waist and truckers end around the belt line.
  6. Zip-up test: close the zipper. Diagonal pulling lines across the chest mean it's too tight; a large gap between the jacket and your chest means it's too loose.

Measure a Jacket You Already Own

The most reliable shortcut is a jacket that already fits you well. Lay it flat, zip it closed and measure:

  • Chest: armpit to armpit, then double it.
  • Shoulders: seam to seam across the back.
  • Sleeve: from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff.
  • Back length: from the collar seam to the hem.

Compare those numbers with our size guide. If your jacket sits between two sizes, the comparison shows exactly where the gap is. For body measurements instead, follow our steps on how to measure for a leather jacket.

When Made to Measure Makes More Sense

If one size pinches your shoulders and the next swamps your waist, or your arms are longer than the chart assumes, a standard size will always be a compromise. Made to measure removes it.

  1. On the product page, choose "Customise Size (made to measure)" and place your order.
  2. Email info@whiteburaq.com with your order number and your measurements.
  3. Your jacket is cut to those numbers and ships within 3–7 business days. Express delivery then takes 3–5 business days in the US and 5–8 elsewhere.

Because made-to-measure pieces are cut for one person, they can't be returned. Take your measurements carefully, ideally with someone helping, and double-check them before you send the email.

FAQ

Should I size up or down in a leather jacket if I'm between sizes?

Size up for heavy layering, broad shoulders, relaxed styles and stiff hides. Stay true or size down for fitted bikers and cafe racers worn over light layers, especially in lambskin.

Will a tight leather jacket stretch to fit?

It will ease a little across the chest and back and mold to your shape, but it won't get meaningfully longer, and tight shoulders rarely loosen enough to feel right.

How should a leather jacket fit in the shoulders?

The seam should sit at the outer edge of your shoulder bone. Shoulders are the hardest part to alter, so get them right before anything else.

Can I return a made-to-measure jacket?

No. Made-to-measure and custom pieces are cut for you and can't be returned, so check your measurements twice before you send them.

Being caught with a leather jacket between sizes is easy to solve once you know which measurement matters most. Start with the shoulders, choose by style and layering, and if neither size feels right, our made to measure service cuts the jacket to your numbers.
