Size labels change as soon as you cross a border, and leather leaves less room for guesswork than a knit does. This leather jacket size conversion guide shows how men's and women's sizes line up across the US, UK and EU, and why your own measurements matter more than any label.
Quick answer: Men's jackets are sized by chest in inches, and US and UK sizes match, so a 40 is a 40 in both. The EU size is usually the chest plus 10, so a 40 becomes a 50. Women's sizes differ: on most charts a US 8 is a UK 12 and an EU 40. Always measure first.
How Men's Leather Jackets Are Sized
Men's jackets and coats in the US and UK use the same number, and that number is your chest measurement in inches. If your chest measures 40 inches around its fullest point, you wear a size 40 in both countries. Some brands add a length, such as short, regular or long, to show how the body and sleeves are cut. Leather coats usually follow the same chest-based numbers, but because you wear them over more layers, check whether the brand's chart already allows for that.
European sizes use a different scale. For jackets, the EU number is usually your chest size plus 10, so a US 38 becomes an EU 48 and a US 42 becomes an EU 52. Letter sizes are less predictable. One brand's medium can be another's large, so treat S, M and L as a starting point and check the measurements behind them.
Men's Leather Jacket Size Conversion Chart
Use this table as a guide to how the systems relate. The chest figures are body measurements, not measurements of the jacket itself.
| US and UK size | EU size | Body chest (inches) | Body chest (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36 | 46 | 36 in | 91 cm |
| 38 | 48 | 38 in | 97 cm |
| 40 | 50 | 40 in | 102 cm |
| 42 | 52 | 42 in | 107 cm |
| 44 | 54 | 44 in | 112 cm |
| 46 | 56 | 46 in | 117 cm |
| 48 | 58 | 48 in | 122 cm |
How Women's Leather Jackets Are Sized
Women's sizes don't map neatly to one body measurement. Instead, each number stands for a set of bust, waist and hip measurements that varies from brand to brand. The systems also use different numbers: a UK size is usually the US size plus four, and on most conversion charts the EU size is the US size plus 32.
There is one catch. Some European brands, particularly those that follow German sizing, label the same fit one step lower, so a US 8 may be tagged EU 38 rather than EU 40. When a brand's chart lists centimeters, trust those over the label.
Women's Size Conversion Chart
| US size | UK size | EU size (most charts) |
|---|---|---|
| US 2 | UK 6 | EU 34 |
| US 4 | UK 8 | EU 36 |
| US 6 | UK 10 | EU 38 |
| US 8 | UK 12 | EU 40 |
| US 10 | UK 14 | EU 42 |
| US 12 | UK 16 | EU 44 |
| US 14 | UK 18 | EU 46 |
| US 16 | UK 20 | EU 48 |
Letter sizes from XS to XL vary so much between brands that no reliable conversion exists, so always check the measurements a brand gives for each letter.
The cut matters as much as the number on the label. A bomber is usually cut with a little more ease, while asymmetrical biker and moto styles are designed to sit close, so the same size can feel quite different from one style to the next. Here are three examples from our range:

How to Convert Your Own Measurements
- Measure your chest or bust over a thin shirt, around the fullest part, with the tape level under your arms. Our step-by-step measuring guide shows exactly where to place the tape.
- Add waist, hips, shoulders and sleeve length. A leather jacket has to fit through the shoulders and sleeves as well as the chest.
- Convert the units. Multiply inches by 2.54 to get centimeters, or divide centimeters by 2.54 to get inches.
- Check what the chart measures. Body measurements describe you. Garment measurements describe the jacket and include extra room, and a chest measured flat across the front is only half the full circumference.
- Find your size. For men, a 40-inch chest is a US or UK 40 and an EU 50. For women, match bust, waist and hips to the brand's chart, then use the table above to translate the label.
What to Do If You're Between Sizes
Men's jacket sizes usually run in even numbers, so a 41-inch chest falls between a 40 and a 42. Women land between sizes just as often. When that happens, think about how you will wear the jacket:
- Layers: if you plan to wear sweaters or hoodies underneath, take the larger size. If it's mostly tees, the smaller size often looks sharper.
- Style: biker and cafe racer jackets are meant to fit close, while bombers, truckers and coats are cut with layering in mind.
- Shoulders first: a leather tailor can sometimes shorten sleeves, but shoulders are very hard to alter. Choose the size that fits them.
Once the jacket arrives, our leather jacket fit checklist helps you judge each point.
Why Leather Sizing Is Different
A knit sweater stretches to fit; leather mostly doesn't. It relaxes a little with wear, shaping itself to your elbows and shoulders, but it won't gain inches across the chest, so a jacket that is tight on day one stays tight. Leather also doesn't compress like fabric when you layer under it, and sleeves need a little extra length because they bunch at the elbow when your arms bend. Our guide to whether leather jackets stretch explains how much give to expect.
Buying Online and Made to Measure
When ordering from any brand, compare your measurements with that brand's own chart rather than relying on your usual label, and read the returns terms first. Our guide to buying a leather jacket online covers what to check.
If standard sizes don't suit your build, our made-to-measure option is simple. Choose "Customise Size (made to measure)" on the product page, place your order, then email info@whiteburaq.com with your order number and measurements. Made-to-measure pieces ship within 3–7 business days. Because each one is cut to your numbers, made-to-measure pieces can't be returned, so double-check your measurements before you send them.
FAQ
Are UK and US leather jacket sizes the same?
For men, yes, because both use chest size in inches. For women, no. A UK size is usually four higher than the US size, so a US 8 is a UK 12.
What EU size is a men's 42 jacket?
An EU 52 on most charts, since European jacket sizes usually add 10 to the chest size in inches.
What is a women's US 10 in EU sizes?
Usually an EU 42, though brands that follow German sizing may label it EU 40. Check the brand's measurements in centimeters to be sure.
Do letter sizes convert between countries?
Not reliably. The same letter can be cut differently from brand to brand, even within one country, so use your chest or bust measurement instead of the letter.
Should I size up in a leather jacket?
Not by default. Size up only if your measurements fall between sizes or you plan to layer thick knits underneath, since leather won't loosen much across the chest.
A leather jacket size conversion gets you close, but your tape measure gets you the rest of the way. Before you order, check your numbers against our size guide and choose the size that fits your shoulders and chest.
