Leather Jacket Styles Explained: Biker, Cafe Racer, Bomber and More
Most leather jackets fall into a handful of classic styles, and each was first made for a job: riding a motorcycle, flying a plane, or working outdoors. Knowing where a style comes from tells you a lot about how it fits and how you'll wear it. Here's a simple guide to the main styles, what sets each one apart, and who it suits.
Biker jacket (asymmetrical moto)
The biker jacket was first made for motorcyclists in the late 1920s and became a style icon in the 1950s. It's the jacket most people picture when they think of leather.
- How to spot it: an off-center front zip, wide lapels that snap down, a belt at the waist, and zips at the cuffs.
- Fit: cut close to the body and fairly short, so it sits at the belt line. The off-center zip and lapels let you close it right up to the neck against the wind.
- Best for: anyone who wants a bold, classic look. It works over a T-shirt or a hoodie and suits jeans more than tailoring.

Cafe racer jacket
The cafe racer comes from 1960s Britain, where young riders raced their stripped-down motorcycles between roadside cafes. Their jackets were stripped down too.
- How to spot it: a straight center zip, a short band collar (often with a snap tab), and very few extras. No lapels, no belt.
- Fit: slim and short, with nothing to flap in the wind.

Bomber and flight jackets
Flight jackets were made for pilots and aircrews in the 1930s and 40s, when cockpits were cold and cramped. Several versions became classics:
- A-2: the US Army Air Corps jacket, adopted in 1931. It has a shirt-style collar, two snap-flap pockets, and knit cuffs and waistband that keep the cold out.
- G-1: the US Navy's version, recognizable by its fur collar and a back with pleats that give extra room to move your arms.
- B-3: a heavy sheepskin jacket with the wool left on the inside, designed for crews flying high in unheated bombers. It's one of the warmest jackets you can buy.
- Modern bomber: a lighter everyday version with a zip front, a ribbed collar or shirt collar, and ribbed cuffs and hem.
