How to Wear an Oversized Leather Jacket and Size Up the Right Way

Black leather blouson aviator jacket and distressed brown leather bomber jacket with shearling collar for women

An oversized leather jacket has an easy, borrowed-from-someone-cooler look, but there is a fine line between relaxed and simply too big. The difference comes down to what you wear with it and how you size it. This guide covers both: outfit formulas that make the volume look intentional, and how many sizes to go up without drowning in leather.

Quick answer: Wear an oversized leather jacket with something slim or defined underneath, such as straight jeans, leggings, a mini dress or a tucked top, and push the sleeves up to show your wrists. To get the look, go one size up for a relaxed fit or two for true oversized, and check that the sleeves still work.

Oversized, relaxed or just too big?

These three are easy to confuse when you are standing in front of a mirror.

  • Relaxed: roughly one size up, or a style cut with extra ease. The shoulders sit slightly past your own, and there is room for a sweater without the jacket looking bulky.
  • Oversized: about two sizes up, or a style designed with dropped shoulders, a roomy body and a longer hem. The volume is obvious and deliberate.
  • Too big: the shoulder seams slide halfway down your upper arm, the sleeves cover your knuckles, and the jacket hangs flat instead of falling in shape. It looks borrowed, not chosen.

If you want a reference point for a standard fit before you size up, our guide to how a leather jacket should fit shows where every seam should sit.

How to wear an oversized leather jacket: the balance rule

Volume on top needs something lean or defined somewhere else. That can be slim legs, a visible waist, bare wrists or a bit of neckline. Without it, the whole outfit looks shapeless.

There are two ways to get the balance right. You can keep the lower half slim with straight jeans, leggings or a short skirt. Or you can go all in with wide-leg trousers and chunky shoes, as long as you keep one thing sharp, such as a tucked-in top or a single color from head to toe.

Six oversized leather jacket outfit formulas

  1. The everyday: oversized jacket, white tee, straight-leg jeans and loafers. Tuck the tee so your waist doesn't disappear.
  2. The short-and-long: jacket over a mini dress or a slip dress with knee boots. Showing leg is the simplest way to balance a big jacket.
  3. The monochrome: black jacket, black turtleneck, black wide-leg trousers and platform boots. One color keeps all that volume looking sleek.
  4. The weekend: jacket over a hoodie with leggings and sneakers. Let the hood sit outside the collar.
  5. The office-friendly: jacket over a fine knit and a midi pencil skirt or slim trousers. The fitted pieces underneath keep it professional.
  6. The belted: cinch a leather belt around your waist over the closed jacket. It turns a boxy shape into an hourglass.

Small styling tricks that make it look intentional

  • Push the sleeves up. Scrunching the sleeves to show your wrists instantly makes the jacket look like it fits you.
  • Wear it open. An open front creates a long vertical line and stops the jacket looking like a box.
  • Drape it. For evenings, wear it over your shoulders without putting your arms through the sleeves.
  • Show your ankles. Cropped trousers or a bare ankle above a loafer lightens the look below a big jacket.
  • Keep accessories bold but few. A chunky earring or a structured bag holds its own against the jacket without cluttering the outfit.

Which jacket styles look best oversized?

Some shapes are made for extra room. Bombers and blousons gather at the hem, so the body can billow without the jacket losing its shape. Truckers have a straight, boxy cut borrowed from workwear that looks natural a size up. Aviators look good roomy because their big collars balance the extra width.

A classic fitted moto is harder to wear oversized. Its cropped length and asymmetrical zip rely on a close fit, so a moto that is too large tends to look sloppy rather than relaxed. If you love the moto, choose a relaxed moto rather than sizing up two sizes. These easy-going shapes are a good place to start:

How to size up for an oversized leather jacket

Start with your own measurements, not the size label. Compare your chest, shoulders and sleeve length against our size guide, then decide how much extra room you want.

  • One size up gives a relaxed fit with room for a hoodie or chunky knit.
  • Two sizes up gives a clearly oversized look. Beyond that, the shoulders and armholes usually collapse.
  • Watch the sleeves. Sleeves get longer with every size, and extra leather bunches heavily at the wrist. Sleeves that reach the base of your thumb can be pushed up; anything past your knuckles is too long.
  • Mind the length. Hip length to upper thigh is the sweet spot. If you are petite, stay closer to the hip.
  • Don't count on stretch or shrinkage. Leather softens and relaxes a little with wear but will not change size much; our guide on whether leather jackets stretch explains what to expect.

Borrowing a men's jacket

Many women get the oversized look from a men's jacket. Men's styles are cut straighter, with broader shoulders and longer sleeves, so compare the actual chest and sleeve measurements rather than converting sizes by label.

Getting the oversized fit made to measure

The cleanest way to get the look is to have it made for you. Choose "Customise Size (made to measure)" on the product page, then email info@whiteburaq.com with your order number and your chest, shoulders, sleeve length, waist, hips and jacket length. Ask for extra room through the chest and body while keeping your normal sleeve length. Our made-to-measure page has the details; these jackets ship within 3–7 business days, and because they are made for you, they can't be returned. Our guide on how to measure for a leather jacket helps you get the numbers right.

Oversized leather for petite and curvy frames

If you are petite, choose oversized in width rather than length. A roomy jacket that still ends at the hip, worn with a slim bottom and matching shoes, looks deliberate; a jacket that reaches mid-thigh can overwhelm you.

If you are curvy, wear the jacket open to create a V, or belt it at the waist. A tucked top and a visible waistline keep your shape from getting lost.

FAQ

Should I size up in a leather jacket?

Only if you want a relaxed or oversized look, or you plan to wear thick layers underneath. For a classic fit, order your true size from your measurements.

Can I wear a men's leather jacket as an oversized women's jacket?

Yes. Just check the sleeve length and shoulder width in inches, since men's jackets are usually longer in the arm and broader across the back.

Are oversized leather jackets still in style?

Relaxed bombers, boxy truckers and roomy aviators are a big part of current fashion. Our leather jacket trends for 2026 covers how they are being worn this season.

Will an oversized leather jacket shrink to fit?

No. Genuine leather doesn't shrink in normal wear, so buy the size you want to wear.

An oversized leather jacket looks best when the volume is clearly your choice: balance it with a slim or defined piece, push up the sleeves, and size up by one or two sizes at most. Browse our women's bomber jackets for easy shapes that suit a relaxed fit.
