What is pigskin?
Pigskin is leather made from the skin of pigs, a by-product of the meat industry. Its most recognisable feature is the pattern of its pores: the hair follicles go right through the skin and are grouped in little clusters of three, so you can often see tiny holes arranged in triangles.
How pigskin looks and feels
Smooth pigskin has a slightly coarse, pitted surface. Pigskin suede has a short, fairly stiff nap. Both are light and let air through easily, which is why pigskin is so popular for linings.

- Pros: breathable, affordable, reasonably tough, softens with use.
- Cons: visible pore pattern can look less refined; lower-grade pigskin suede can feel coarse; not a first choice for fine outerwear.
What pigskin is best for
Shoe and bag linings, work and driving gloves, budget suede items and some upholstery. It has also been used for fine furniture and saddlery in the past.
How to care for pigskin
Brush suede versions with a suede brush and wipe smooth pigskin with a damp cloth. Condition occasionally and let it dry naturally.

Cowhide is thicker, stronger and smoother, which makes it better for jackets. Pigskin is lighter, more breathable and cheaper.
