Waxed leather is one of the most rewarding finishes a jacket can have, and one of the easiest to look after once you understand it. Good waxed leather jacket care is mostly about working with the oils and waxes already in the hide rather than scrubbing them out.
Quick answer: Brush off dust, wipe dirt with a barely damp cloth, and rub light pull-up marks with your fingers or a soft cloth so the wax warms and blends back. Rewax or condition only when the leather looks dry or stops shedding water, using thin coats on a tested spot, then buff. Avoid soaking, direct heat and silicone sprays.
What is waxed leather, and how is it different from waxed canvas?
Waxed leather, often sold as pull-up or oiled leather, is genuine leather that has been worked with oils and waxes during tanning and finishing, so the hide carries its own built-in conditioning. When you bend or stretch it, those oils and waxes shift and the color lightens along the fold. That pull-up effect is the whole charm: the jacket records how you wear it. Our guide to pull-up leather explains the tannery side.
Waxed canvas is a different material entirely: cotton fabric impregnated with wax to repel water. It is rewaxed with a fabric wax and gentle heat, and those methods should never be used on a leather jacket.
How do you fix pull-up marks and light scratches?
Most light marks on waxed leather are not damage at all. The wax has simply moved. To blend them back:
- Rub the mark firmly with your thumb or fingertips. Body warmth and the natural oils on your skin help the wax flow back into place.
- For a larger area, buff with a soft, dry cotton cloth in small circles.
- If a mark still shows, add a little gentle warmth, such as a hair dryer on its lowest setting held well away for a few seconds, then buff again. Keep it moving and never let the leather get hot.
- Scratches that cut into the surface may need a small amount of wax-based conditioner worked in with a cloth. Our guide to fixing scratches on a leather jacket covers deeper repairs.
Some lightening at the elbows, pockets and collar is meant to stay. That is the patina that makes a waxed jacket look like yours.
How do you clean a waxed leather jacket?
Clean rarely and gently. The wax finish already repels a lot of dirt, so most jackets only need:
- A dry, soft brush or cloth to lift dust and grit, especially from seams and around the collar.
- A soft cloth dampened with lukewarm water and wrung out well, wiped over marks without scrubbing.
- A tiny amount of mild soap on the cloth for stubborn grime, followed by a clean damp wipe.
Never soak the jacket or put it in a washing machine, and go easy on saddle soap. It is alkaline and can strip oils, so on waxed leather it may leave patches dull and dry. If you do use it on a heavily soiled area, keep it brief and condition afterward. Let the jacket dry on a broad hanger at room temperature before doing anything else.
When and how should you rewax or condition it?
Rewax when the leather tells you to, not on a fixed calendar. The signs are a dry or faded look, a stiffer feel, and water soaking in instead of beading. For a jacket worn regularly, that is often once or twice a year.
- Clean the jacket and let it dry completely.
- Choose a wax-based conditioner or leather wax suited to oiled or pull-up leather.
- Test it on a hidden spot, such as under the collar or inside a front facing, and check it the next day. Many products darken the color slightly.
- Apply a thin, even coat with a soft cloth or your fingers, working in small circles. Warm hands help the wax spread.
- Let it absorb for at least an hour, then buff with a clean cloth to bring back the sheen. Add a second thin coat only where the leather still looks dry.
Thin coats beat thick ones every time. Excess wax sits on the surface, attracts dust and can feel tacky. For a full walkthrough of technique, see how to condition a leather jacket.

What should you do if a waxed leather jacket gets wet?
A waxed finish handles a shower better than most leathers, and water usually beads and rolls off. After rain, shake the jacket, blot it with a towel, and hang it on a broad hanger away from radiators, heaters and direct sun. Let it dry slowly, because fast heat leaves wet leather stiff and uneven. Once it is dry, rub out any water spots with your fingers and add a thin coat of wax if the surface looks thirsty. There are more tips in our guide to wearing a leather jacket in the rain.
How should you store a waxed leather jacket?
- Hang it on a wide, shaped hanger so the shoulders keep their form.
- Use a breathable cotton garment bag, never plastic, which traps moisture.
- Keep it cool and dry, away from radiators, sunny windows and hot cars, where the wax can soften and move.
- Give it room in the closet so the finish does not rub against other clothes.
Before seasonal storage, clean it and condition it lightly. Our guide on how to store a leather jacket covers long-term storage in more detail.
What should you avoid with waxed leather?
- Washing machines, tumble dryers and soaking.
- Direct heat from radiators, heaters or a hair dryer held close.
- Silicone sprays and shine products, which seal the surface, stop the leather breathing and make later rewaxing and repairs harder.
- Harsh cleaners, solvents and household wipes.
- Waxed canvas dressings, which are made for fabric, not hide.
- Over-conditioning, which leaves a sticky film.
How often does waxed leather jacket care need to happen?
Less often than you might think. A simple rhythm covers most owners:
- After each wear: hang it up properly and brush off any dust.
- Every few weeks of regular wear: a quick wipe and a rub over any new marks.
- Once or twice a year: a gentle clean followed by a thin rewax.
- Before storage: clean, condition lightly and bag it.
FAQ
Can I use regular leather conditioner on waxed leather?
Usually, yes, but test it first. Cream conditioners can darken waxed leather and may not restore its water resistance, so a wax-based product made for oiled or pull-up leather is the better match.
Will the light marks on my waxed jacket go away?
Most fade when rubbed with warm fingers or a soft cloth. Marks in high-movement areas such as the elbows tend to return and settle into patina, which is how waxed leather is meant to age.
Is waxed leather waterproof?
No leather jacket is fully waterproof, but waxed leather is water resistant. Light rain beads off, while a downpour will eventually soak through seams and the hide, so dry it slowly afterward.
Can I wax an ordinary leather jacket?
You can add some water resistance and sheen with a leather wax, but it will not create the pull-up effect, which comes from oils and waxes worked into the hide at the tannery. Test on a hidden spot first, because wax usually darkens the color.
Good waxed leather jacket care takes minutes, not hours, and every season makes the finish richer. If you are ready for one of your own, browse our men's leather jackets and look for the waxed finishes.
