B-3 Bomber Jacket Guide: Sheepskin, Fit and Cold-Weather Wear

B-3 Bomber Jacket Guide: Sheepskin, Fit and Cold-Weather Wear

Men's Distressed Brown Sheepskin B-3 Bomber Jacket, Women's Distressed Brown Sheepskin B-3 Bomber Jacket and Men's Distressed Brown Sheepskin B-3 Bomber Jacket with Waist Straps side by side

The B-3 bomber jacket is the heaviest, warmest classic in the flight jacket family: a thick sheepskin shell with the wool left on the inside, first built for bomber crews who flew in brutal cold. This guide covers where it came from, the details that make a B-3 a B-3, how it should fit over layers, how to wear one now and how to keep the shearling in good shape.

Quick answer: A B-3 bomber jacket is a heavy sheepskin shearling flight jacket adopted by the US Army Air Corps in the 1930s for crews flying in freezing, unpressurized bombers. Look for a wide shearling collar with leather straps, waist straps and a heavy zip front. Fit it with room for a sweater and wear it in real winter cold.

What is a B-3 bomber jacket?

The B-3 is a winter flying jacket standardized by the US Army Air Corps in the 1930s. It was made from sheepskin shearling, meaning the hide was tanned with the wool still attached, then cut so the leather side faces out and the dense wool sits against the body.

Its job was simple: keep air crews warm enough to work. Bombers of the era, including the B-17 and B-24, were unheated and unpressurized, and at high altitude the air temperature could fall far below zero. Thick shearling was one of the few materials that could hold body heat in those conditions, and B-3s were worn by bomber crews during World War II. For the wider family tree, the history of the flight jacket is worth a read.

That same warmth is why people still buy a B-3 today. If you want the background on the material itself, our guide to what shearling is and why it is so warm explains how wool-on sheepskin traps heat.

What are the signature details of a B-3?

A true B-3 pattern is easy to spot once you know what to look for:

  • Wide shearling collar. The big wool collar turns up around the neck and ears and, on the classic design, closes with two leather straps.
  • Waist adjustment straps. Two straps at the hem let the wearer cinch the jacket to stop cold air rising from below. Unlike the A-2, the B-3 has no knit waistband or knit cuffs.
  • Heavy zip front. A sturdy front zipper closes the thick shearling body.
  • Wool through the body and sleeves. The shearling lines the torso and arms, so the warmth wraps the whole upper body.
  • Short, boxy shape. It is a jacket, not a coat: the hem usually sits around the top of the hips, and the cut is roomy rather than trim.
  • Brown leather. Brown is the classic color, often with a worn, distressed surface that looks better with every season.

How is a B-3 different from an A-2 and other flight jackets?

The short version: the A-2 is a lighter leather jacket with a knit waistband and cuffs, while the B-3 is a heavy shearling jacket made for extreme cold. You layer under an A-2; the B-3 is the warm layer. Our full A-2 vs B-3 flight jacket comparison goes through collars, weight and fit side by side.

How should a B-3 bomber jacket fit?

Shearling takes up room inside the jacket, so a B-3 wears closer than an unlined leather jacket in the same size. That does not mean you should automatically size up. Check these points instead:

  • Shoulders: the seams sit at or just past the edge of your shoulders, with no drooping.
  • Chest: it zips closed over a knit sweater or a hoodie without pulling across the front.
  • Sleeves: they reach the wrist bone with arms relaxed and do not ride far up when you reach forward.
  • Length: the hem lands around the top of the hip, and the waist straps have room to tighten rather than sitting at their limit.
  • Movement: you can cross your arms and turn the wheel of a car without the back feeling tight.

Measure yourself while wearing the layer you plan to wear most, then compare with our leather jacket size guide. If you fall between sizes or have long arms or a long torso, choose "Customise Size (made to measure)" at checkout and email info@whiteburaq.com with your order number and measurements. Made-to-measure pieces ship within 3–7 business days, and because these pieces are cut for you, they can't be returned.

Each of these B-3 styles is handmade in our workshop from genuine sheepskin leather, with cuts for both men and women.

How do you wear a B-3 today?

A B-3 is a statement piece, so keep the rest of the outfit simple and let the collar do the talking. Its bulk looks best balanced by slimmer pieces underneath and solid footwear.

Outfit ideas for men

  • Dark jeans, a gray crewneck sweater and leather work boots: the classic winter look that never feels forced.
  • Wool trousers, a fine turtleneck and lace-up boots for a sharper city version.
  • A hoodie, slim cargo pants and lug-sole boots for the coldest weekend days.

Outfit ideas for women

  • Slim jeans or leggings, a fitted turtleneck and knee-high boots, which balance the volume of the jacket.
  • A knit midi dress with opaque tights and lug-sole boots; the shearling collar adds warmth and texture.
  • Straight-leg trousers and a close-fitting knit, with the waist straps cinched to show a little shape.

Stick to calm colors near the brown leather: cream, oatmeal, navy, olive, charcoal and black all work. For more ways to manage the volume, see our tips on how to wear a shearling jacket without looking bulky.

How do you care for a sheepskin B-3?

Shearling is low-maintenance as long as you avoid a few common mistakes:

  • Brush the wool. A light pass with a wire brush keeps the collar and lining lofted, especially after it has been damp.
  • Blot, do not rub. Shake off snow and blot rain with a clean towel. Light showers are fine, but do not let the jacket soak through.
  • Dry slowly. Hang it on a wide hanger at room temperature, away from radiators, heaters, hair dryers and direct sun.
  • Deal with salt quickly. Sponge road salt off with a damp cloth and let the area air-dry.
  • Lift grease with cornstarch. Sprinkle it on the spot, leave it for a day or so, then brush it away.
  • Store it to breathe. Use a broad, curved hanger and a cotton or other breathable garment bag, never plastic.
  • Go to a specialist for deep cleaning. Set-in stains need a cleaner who works with leather and sheepskin, not a standard dry cleaner.

Who is a B-3 bomber jacket best for?

A B-3 is built for real winter. It makes the most sense if:

  • You live with long, cold winters and spend time walking or waiting outdoors.
  • You want a leather jacket that can stand in for a winter coat on most days.
  • You like vintage military style and are happy with a substantial, boxy silhouette.

If your winters are mild or you drive everywhere, a full B-3 can be too warm for daily use. A lighter flight jacket, or a leather jacket with just a shearling collar, may be the smarter buy, and you can compare both kinds among our shearling jackets.

FAQ

Is a B-3 bomber jacket warm enough for winter?

Yes. With wool-on sheepskin through the body and sleeves and a collar that closes around the neck, it is one of the warmest leather jackets you can wear. In freezing weather, a light sweater underneath is often enough.

Can you wear a B-3 in rain or snow?

Light snow and brief showers are fine. Shake it off, blot it with a towel and let it dry at room temperature. Avoid getting it soaked, and never dry it with direct heat.

Should I size up in a B-3?

Not automatically. The shearling already reduces interior room, so start with your usual size and check that it closes over your thickest regular layer. Size up only if you plan to wear heavy knits or hoodies underneath most of the time.

What are the straps on a B-3 for?

The two collar straps hold the turned-up collar closed around the neck, and the waist straps cinch the hem to keep cold air out. Today the waist straps also let you pull in the boxy shape for a neater look.

A well-fitted B-3 bomber jacket is one of the few leather jackets that can carry you through a hard winter, and its shearling and leather only gain character with wear. Browse our bomber and flight jackets to find the B-3 that suits your climate and your wardrobe.
