What is calfskin?
Calfskin comes from young cattle. A younger animal has a thinner hide with a tighter, finer grain and fewer scars or marks. The result is a leather that is smooth, supple and strong for its thickness. Hides are smaller than full-grown cowhides, so calfskin costs more and is used most often where a fine surface matters, such as shoes, handbags, wallets and watch straps.
You may see the term box calf: a smooth, chrome-tanned calfskin with a polished finish, long used for classic dress shoes.
How calfskin looks and feels
Calfskin feels smooth and even, almost silky, with pores so fine you can barely see them. It takes a high shine with polish, holds crisp shapes and creases gently rather than deeply.

How to care for calfskin
Keep it clean with a soft cloth, use a good cream or conditioner a few times a year, and polish shoes regularly. Use shoe trees for footwear and store bags stuffed so they keep their shape.
