How Much Does a Good Leather Jacket Cost?
Leather jacket prices range from under $100 to several thousand dollars, and the price tag doesn't always tell you what you're getting. Here's what actually goes into the cost of a leather jacket, what you can expect at different price points, and how to tell whether a jacket is worth its price.
What you're paying for
- The leather. A full jacket takes a lot of hide, and the type and grade matter. Full-grain and quality top-grain leathers cost more than thin split leather, and bonded leather (scraps glued to a backing) costs the least of all.
- The work. A handmade jacket is cut, stitched and finished by skilled craftspeople, and that takes many hours. Details such as quilting, extra pockets, belts and shearling collars add more.
- Hardware and lining. Reliable metal zips (such as YKK), solid snaps and buckles, and a well-sewn lining all cost more than cheap alternatives, and they're usually the first things to fail on a poorly made jacket.
- How it reaches you. Every step between the workshop and you, such as wholesalers, distributors and retail stores, adds a markup. Buying directly from the maker removes most of these.
- The brand name. With designer labels, a large part of the price is the name and the marketing.
What to expect at different prices
These are rough guides based on what's widely available in the US market, not fixed rules.
- Under about $150: often faux (PU or PVC), bonded leather or very thin split leather. Check the label carefully. See how to tell real leather from fake.
- About $200–$600: the range where you can find genuine leather jackets from makers who sell directly, with good hardware and solid construction. Quality varies, so use the checklist below.
- About $600–$1,500: heavier hides, specialist leathers such as horsehide, more detailed construction and established heritage brands.
- Over $1,500: mostly designer and luxury labels, where the name adds a large share of the cost.
Is a leather jacket worth it? Think in cost per wear
A good leather jacket can last for decades with simple care. Say you pay $400 and wear it 50 days a year for 10 years. That's about 80 cents per wear, and it will likely keep going long after that. A $90 faux jacket that peels after two winters costs you more in the long run.
Signs a jacket is worth its price
- The leather type is named clearly, for example "cowhide" or "lambskin", not just "genuine leather feel".
- Stitching is small, even and straight, with no loose threads.
- The zips are metal, run smoothly and come from a known maker.
- Large areas are cut from big panels of leather rather than lots of small patches.
- The seller tells you where and how it's made, lists real contact details and has a clear return policy.

Red flags
- A price that seems far too low for real leather
- Vague descriptions such as "PU leather", "vegan leather" or "leather look" on a jacket sold as leather
- No information about the leather, where it's made or who makes it
- No return policy, or no way to contact the seller
