Leather Harrington Jacket: History, Details and How to Wear It

Brown lambskin Harrington jacket

The Harrington is one of menswear's simplest jackets: short, zip-fronted, with a small stand collar and a clean, sporty shape. A leather Harrington jacket keeps those lines but trades the usual cotton for genuine leather, so it looks richer and wears in over time. Here is where the style came from, the details that define it and how to wear it.

Quick answer: A leather Harrington jacket is a short, waist-length zip jacket with a two-button stand collar, raglan sleeves, ribbed cuffs and waistband, and slanted flap pockets, made in genuine leather instead of cotton. It should fit close with a slight blouse above the hem, and it pairs easily with polos, knits, chinos and jeans.

What is a Harrington jacket?

A Harrington is a lightweight, waist-length jacket with a full front zip and a short stand collar that fastens with two buttons at the throat. The cuffs and hem are gathered, usually with ribbed knit, so the body blouses slightly above the waist.

It often gets lumped in with bombers, and the two are close relatives. The Harrington is trimmer and smarter, though, with a neat collar and clean lines that make it easy to wear over a collared shirt.

Where the Harrington came from

The style took shape in 1930s Britain as a golf jacket. It was short enough not to catch during a swing, had raglan sleeves for free movement, and was made from a tightly woven cotton that shed light rain. It soon spread beyond the golf course and became a casual staple on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Harrington name arrived in the 1960s. A character with that surname wore the jacket in a popular American TV drama, and a London menswear shop began advertising it under his name. Around the same time, British youth subcultures adopted it as part of a sharp, clean-cut look, and it has stayed in menswear ever since.

The details that define a Harrington

These are the features to look for, whether the jacket is cotton or leather:

  • Stand collar with two buttons. Short and upright, closing at the throat. It can be worn up or folded flat.
  • Full-length front zip. Running from hem to collar for a clean, uncluttered front.
  • Raglan sleeves. The sleeve seams run diagonally from the underarm to the collar, giving a soft shoulder and easy movement.
  • Ribbed cuffs and waistband. They hold the jacket close at the wrists and waist and create the gentle blouse.
  • Umbrella yoke. A loose panel across the upper back, originally meant to let rain run off rather than soak through.
  • Slanted flap pockets. Usually closed with a button.
  • Check lining. A tartan lining is the traditional finishing touch.

Not every Harrington has every detail, and leather versions often simplify the yoke or lining. The collar, zip, short length and gathered hem are what make the jacket recognizable.

What changes in a leather Harrington jacket

The original was a light cotton jacket for mild weather. Leather gives the same shape more presence and far better wind resistance, and it develops creases and character the more you wear it.

Weight is the key choice. The Harrington is meant to feel light and easy, so a supple leather suits it best, while a stiff, heavy hide fights the relaxed blouson shape. That is why lambskin works so well here: it is soft and light from day one and drapes naturally into the gathered waist. Read more in our guide to lambskin leather.

Color matters too. Brown leather gives the jacket a warm, heritage feel that pairs with cream, navy and olive, while black looks sleeker and more urban.

Harrington vs bomber vs cafe racer

All three are short, zip-front jackets, but the collar and hem tell them apart at a glance.

Harrington Bomber Cafe racer
Collar Two-button stand collar Knit rib or shearling-style collar Short band collar with snap tab
Sleeves Raglan Usually set-in and roomy Set-in and close
Hem Ribbed, slight blouse Ribbed, fuller blouse Plain, no rib
Overall look Smart and sporty Casual and relaxed Sleek and minimal

Pick the Harrington if you want a short jacket that sits comfortably with a collared shirt. Our cafe racer jacket guide and leather jacket styles explained cover the other shapes in more depth.

Our Men's Brown Lambskin Harrington Jacket brings the classic shape into soft lambskin. It is shown here next to a bomber and a cafe racer so you can compare the collars and hems.

How a leather Harrington jacket should fit

Because the sleeves are raglan, there is no shoulder seam to judge. Check the fit at the chest, collar, hem and sleeves instead.

  • Chest: zipped, it should fit over a shirt or light knit with a little ease, never skin-tight.
  • Collar: buttoned at the throat, you should be able to slide two fingers inside.
  • Hem: the waistband should sit at or just over your belt, with the body blousing slightly above it.
  • Sleeves: the ribbed cuff should rest at your wrist bone and not ride up when you reach forward.

Use our size guide to measure yourself, and see how a leather jacket should fit for more checks. If you fall between sizes, choose "Customise Size (made to measure)" on the product page and email info@whiteburaq.com with your order number and your chest, shoulders, sleeve length, waist, hips and jacket length. Made-to-measure pieces can't be returned, so measure carefully.

How to wear a leather Harrington jacket

The Harrington looks best when everything around it is neat. A few reliable combinations:

  • Classic: a knitted or cotton polo shirt, slim chinos and suede desert boots or loafers.
  • Smart casual: an Oxford button-down, dark jeans and brown leather shoes, with the collar folded flat.
  • Cooler days: a crewneck or merino roll-neck underneath, with the collar buttoned up.
  • Weekend: a plain T-shirt, straight-leg jeans and white leather sneakers.

Fitted trousers, clean shoes and simple knits keep the sporty-but-smart balance that made the jacket a classic. More pairing ideas are in what to wear with a leather jacket.

Caring for a leather Harrington

Light leather needs gentle care. Wipe off marks with a soft, slightly damp cloth, let the jacket dry away from direct heat if it gets wet, and condition it once or twice a year.

Rib-knit cuffs and waistbands can lose their shape if they are tugged, so pull the jacket on by the body rather than the cuffs. Hang it on a shaped hanger so the collar and shoulders stay neat.

FAQ

Is a Harrington jacket the same as a bomber?

They are close relatives but not the same. A Harrington has a two-button stand collar, raglan sleeves and a slimmer, smarter cut, while a bomber usually has a knit collar and a fuller, more relaxed body.

Should a Harrington be zipped up?

Both ways work. Zip it up with the collar buttoned when it is cold, or wear it half-zipped or open over a shirt for a relaxed look.

Is a leather Harrington warm enough for winter?

It is a transitional jacket, best from spring through fall. Leather blocks wind well, so with a sweater underneath it handles cool days, but it isn't built for deep winter; our guide on whether leather jackets are warm explains why.

Is a Harrington jacket smart casual?

Yes, it is one of the most smart casual jackets there is. It sits comfortably over a polo or button-down with chinos, and leather makes it look a little more polished again.

A leather Harrington jacket gives you a smart, lightweight layer that works from spring through fall. Browse our men's leather jackets to find the lambskin Harrington and other clean, zip-front styles.
