Aniline vs Semi-Aniline vs Pigmented Leather: Finishes Explained

Two jackets can be made from the same hide and still look and wear very differently. The difference is often the finish.

What is aniline leather?
Aniline leather is coloured with transparent, soluble dyes that soak right through the hide. No opaque coating is added on top, so you can see the natural grain, pores and marks. It's the most natural-looking finish, and it's often called naked leather when there's little or no topcoat at all.
Semi-aniline leather is dyed in the same way but gets a thin protective topcoat, sometimes with a little pigment, for more even colour and some stain resistance.
Pigmented (or protected) leather has an opaque, paint-like coating on the surface. It hides natural marks and gives the most uniform, easy-care finish.
How each finish looks and feels
- Aniline: soft, warm and natural; shows marks; develops a strong patina.
- Semi-aniline: natural look with a bit more protection and consistency.
- Pigmented: even colour, slightly less soft, resists stains and fading.
Pros and cons
- Aniline pros: most natural look and feel, breathes well, ages beautifully. Cons: stains, fades and scratches more easily.
- Pigmented pros: durable, easy to clean, consistent colour. Cons: less natural, doesn't develop as much patina.
How to care for aniline leather
Keep it away from direct sun, blot spills straight away, and condition it regularly. Semi-aniline and pigmented leathers need less, just a wipe and an occasional conditioner.

Frequently asked questions
What does aniline leather mean?
Leather coloured with see-through dyes and no opaque surface coating, so its natural grain shows.
Is semi-aniline leather good?
Yes. It keeps much of aniline's natural look while adding a thin protective layer for easier care.
Which leather finish is easiest to care for?
Pigmented leather, because its surface coating resists stains and fading.
