Vegetable-Tanned Leather: The Traditional Way to Tan

Vegetable tanning is one of the oldest ways to turn hides into leather. It uses tannins from plants, and it produces leather that ages with deep character.

What is vegetable-tanned leather?
Vegetable-tanned leather, often shortened to "veg-tan", is tanned using natural tannins extracted from tree bark, wood and other plant material, such as oak, chestnut, mimosa and quebracho. The hides soak in tannin solutions of increasing strength, a process that can take weeks. The slow method gives the leather a firm body and a natural colour.
How vegetable-tanned leather looks and feels
It's usually firmer than chrome-tanned leather, with a warm, earthy smell. Light, natural veg-tan darkens noticeably with sunlight and handling, building a rich honey-coloured patina. It also takes stamping and carving well, which is why it's the choice for tooled leather.
Pros and cons
- Pros: ages and darkens beautifully, firm and structured, can be tooled and moulded, traditional craft.
- Cons: slower and more expensive to make; stiffer; water can leave spots; colour can shift in sunlight.
What vegetable-tanned leather is best for
Belts, saddles, holsters, wallets, bags, shoe soles and tooled goods. Softer veg-tanned hides are also used for jackets and shirts.
How to care for vegetable-tanned leather
Keep it dry, wipe off dust, and condition occasionally. If it gets wet, blot it and let it dry slowly at room temperature, away from heat.
Vegetable vs chrome tanning
Chrome tanning is faster and makes softer, more water-resistant leather in a wider range of colours. Veg-tan is firmer, slower to make and ages with more character.

Frequently asked questions
Is vegetable-tanned leather better?
It ages with more character and suits structured goods. Chrome-tanned leather is softer and more water resistant. Each has its place.
Why does veg-tan leather darken?
Natural tannins react to light, air and the oils from your hands, which deepens the colour over time.
Is vegetable-tanned leather eco-friendly?
It uses plant-based tannins instead of chromium salts, but every tanning method uses water and energy, so it depends on how the tannery is run.
