What is shell cordovan?
Shell cordovan is not the outer skin of the horse. It comes from a tough, fibrous layer called the "shell" that lies beneath the hide on the horse's rump. Each horse yields just two small oval shells, so the supply is tiny. The shells are usually vegetable-tanned and then shaved, oiled and hand-finished over many weeks, which is part of why the leather is so expensive.
How shell cordovan looks and feels
Shell cordovan has an extremely smooth, dense surface with a deep lustre that deepens with polishing. Instead of forming sharp creases, it "rolls" into soft ripples where it flexes. Burgundy (often called colour #8), black and brown are the classic shades.

- Cons: very expensive; limited supply; small pieces mean it's used mainly for shoes and small goods; water can leave spots that need buffing out.

Dress shoes and boots, wallets, watch straps, belts and card holders. It is not practical for full garments because each shell is so small.
How to care for shell cordovan
Brush it after wear, buff it with a cloth, and use a conditioner made for cordovan occasionally. If it gets water spots, let it dry and buff them away. Use shoe trees for footwear.
