Crocodile leather is one of the most imitated surfaces in fashion, and a well-made embossed copy can pass at a glance. Knowing how to tell if crocodile leather is real comes down to a handful of details that are hard to fake all at once: the tiles, the grooves, the edges and the paperwork.
Quick answer: Real crocodile leather has tiles that vary in size and shape, never repeat, and sit between grooves you can feel. Most true crocodile scales show a tiny pore. Embossed copies repeat one uniform pattern over plain leather. Genuine pieces also ship with CITES export documents, so ask what paperwork comes with the order.
Real vs embossed crocodile leather: what's the difference?
Genuine crocodile leather is the tanned hide of a crocodilian, the family that includes crocodiles, alligators and caimans. Every tile you see grew on the animal, so no two hides share the same pattern.
Embossed leather is ordinary leather pressed under a heated, engraved plate that stamps a scale pattern into the surface. Printed versions skip the pressing and simply print the pattern on. Both can look good and cost far less, which is why they are everywhere. They only become a problem when someone sells them as the real thing.
Our embossed leather guide explains how the process works, and our real vs fake leather guide helps if you are not sure a piece is leather at all. This guide focuses on one question: is the crocodile pattern in front of you genuine?
How to tell if crocodile leather is real: 8 signs
No single test settles it. Check these in good daylight, look at the whole jacket rather than one panel, and trust the overall picture.
1. The tiles vary and never repeat
On a real hide, the tiles change as you move across it. They are larger and more rectangular across the middle of the belly and become smaller and rounder toward the sides, with small irregularities everywhere. Pick one distinctive tile or cluster and look for its twin elsewhere on the jacket. On embossed leather you can often find it again, because the plate repeats the same pattern across the whole hide.
2. The grooves have real depth
Run a fingertip across the surface. Genuine tiles feel like firm, slightly raised pads separated by softer creases, and you can feel each edge. Embossed grooves are pressed-in lines, so the surface tends to feel flatter and more even. Then bend a small area gently, such as the lower sleeve. Real crocodilian leather folds along the creases between the tiles, while embossed leather folds wherever you bend it, often straight across the stamped tiles.
3. Look for a tiny pore on each scale
True crocodiles have a small sensory pore, a dot or pit, on almost every body scale, and it stays visible after tanning. Alligators and caimans have these pores only around the jaws, so a belly with no dots is not automatically fake: it may simply be alligator. A good embossing plate can copy the dots too, so treat them as one clue rather than proof.
4. Natural marks and small flaws
Animals carry their history in their skin. Look for slight differences in tile shape, the odd healed mark, and gentle shifts in tone where the finish has taken differently. Some belly hides, especially alligator, also show an umbilical scar: an elongated, star-shaped patch of small, webbed scales near the middle. Finding one is a strong sign. Not finding one proves nothing, because a jacket panel may come from another part of the hide.
5. The edges and the underside
Wherever you can see a cut edge or the back of the leather, such as a pocket opening or an inside facing, take a close look. Embossing lives only on the surface, so the edge and underside of an embossed panel look like any ordinary smooth leather. On real hide, the thickness changes between tile and groove, and you can often see that rhythm along a cut edge.
6. Panels and seams
A crocodilian hide is much smaller than the hides used for most leather jackets, so a genuine crocodile jacket is usually built from several panels, with seams placed to make the most of each hide. The tile pattern stops at each seam and starts fresh on the next panel. A very large, seamless panel with a perfectly regular pattern deserves a second look.
7. A price that makes sense
Genuine crocodilian leather is costly to tan, finish and cut, and each hide yields a limited amount of usable leather. If a "real crocodile" jacket costs about the same as an everyday leather jacket, the price is telling you something. A high price is not proof on its own, though, which is why the last sign matters most.
8. The paperwork
International trade in crocodilian leather is regulated under CITES, the international agreement that governs trade in listed wild animals and plants. Our genuine pieces ship with CITES export documents, and the permit names the exact species. Before you buy from anyone, ask what documents come with the order and which species they name. A seller who changes the subject has answered your question.

What about alligator and caiman?
Crocodile, alligator and caiman are all crocodilians, and all three produce genuine leather. They simply look a little different. Alligator belly leather tends to have smooth, even tiles with no pores on the body. Caiman hides contain small bony plates that make the leather stiffer and can leave the color slightly uneven after dyeing. None of this makes one of them fake; it only changes what you should expect to see.
That is also why we describe our crocodile and alligator pieces as genuine crocodilian leather rather than guessing: the exact species is named on the CITES permit shipped with your order, so your documents tell you precisely what you are wearing. FAQ
Is crocodile-embossed leather real leather?
Often, yes. Many embossed pieces are genuine leather stamped with a scale pattern, though some are synthetic. Either way it is not crocodile leather, and an honest seller will describe it as embossed or printed.
Can a burn test tell me if crocodile leather is real?
No. At best a burn test hints at whether something is leather or plastic, and it cannot tell crocodilian leather from embossed leather. It also damages the piece, so skip it and rely on the visual and touch checks above.
Can I tell if crocodile leather is real from photos?
Partly. Sharp, close-up photos in daylight let you check for repeating tiles, pores and natural marks, but groove depth, flex and cut edges need the piece in hand. When buying online, ask the seller for close-ups of several panels and details of the documents that come with it.
Does genuine crocodile leather feel stiff?
It depends on the cut and finish. Belly leather is generally the most supple part of the hide, while the bony back section is far more rigid. A well-made belly jacket should feel firm across the tiles yet flex easily at the creases.
